Gladiators 2024: Meet Damien Rider, the former The Bachelorette contestant behind Cobra

Damien Rider, who depicts Cobra on Gladiators Australia 2024, is no stranger to reality TV, he competed in Ali Oetjen’s season of The Bachelorette Australia in 2018.

When Damien’s not looking for love, he’s (probably) going hard in the gym, considering his impressive physical accomplishments over the years.

The Gladiator has pushed a three-tonne truck down the Gold Coast, became the first person to skateboard the entire Route 66 in the Mojave Desert, which took 56 days and paddled 800km from the Gold Coast to Bondi to raise awareness for “Paddle Against Child Abuse”.

He was named Men’s Health Man of the Year

After Damien’s gallant physical effort, Rider was announced as Men’s Health’s Man of the Year in 2015.

“Was an honour to be awarded Men’s Health Man of the Year!,” He wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of him holding his magazine cover.

Damien was also nominated twice for Australian of the Year.

Damien was caught up in a reality TV scam

After appearing on The Bachelorette, where he was eliminated in episode three, Damien was approached about appearing on another reality TV show, this time in Indonesia.

Damien Rider. The Bachelorette. Ten.

Damien was contacted by a person pretending to be Wendy Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch’s ex-wife. He told 2GB’s Ben Fordham that the person said they wanted to discuss a possible television series idea after reading about him in the Australian edition of Men’s Health.

“Everything fit with who I am or what I do. They sent me NDAs, pilot scripts, they sent me schedules of where we’re going to go.”

Damien paid out of his own pocket to meet what he thought were the showrunners in Jakarta. Once he arrived he was driven 4.5 hours away from the airport and put up in a five-star hotel. Once there, he handed over $1000.

“I thought you know what everything’s checking out here,” he said. “Am I being paranoid?”

“At night I was having what turned out to be a three-way conversation with an assistant, with Wendy Murdoch and with Lorraine Jobs (Steve Jobs’ widow),” he said.

Feeling suspicious about the ordeal, Damien returned to Australia and followed up with the police. It turned out that the ‘reality tv show’ was a scammer, and the matter was handed to the FBI.

Gladiators Australia 2024 airs Sundays – Wednesday at 7:30pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.

Gladiators 2024: Meet Hammer, the returnee OG Gladiator with a big role in the series

OG Gladiator Hammer is returning for the Gladiators 2024 revival, but he’s in a very different role.

Mark McGaw will be reprising his role of Hammer, but this time he will be a referee on the competition reality show.

Mark appeared in all three seasons of the original Gladiators series from 1995-1996. Speaking of his return, Liz Ellis, who is hosting the reboot alongside Beau Ryan, said that Mark helped show the new team the ropes.

“He was great to have on set because he schooled us in the 1990s version of Gladiators,” she told Chattr in an interview during December 2023, in preparation for the January 15 launch. “And he told us about the international test series, America versus Australia versus England.

“He also had all the old [costume] sets so the bomber jacket, the unitard that he used to wear when he was Hammer. It was just amazing because it was a beautiful link back to the original show. He was able to tell us all about it.

Hammer, Tower and Vulcan. Gladiators.

Hammer was a well-known NRL player

It’s been a minute since the Gladiator-Challenger-turned-referee played NRL, but he was once very successful at it.

He played professional rugby for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs. He’s competed in more than 12 State of Origin clashes, with the first being in 1987.

Mark McGaw in State of Origin. Twitter.

Will Hammer be refereeing the same challenges he used to compete in?

He sure will! Many of the challenges from the original edition of Gladiators Australia will be returning in the 2024 version.

Some of those returning challenges include Hang Tough, the well-known Pyramid, and the iconic Eliminator, which features a travelator.

“I love that the new series is so obviously made for an audience that’s thirty years on,” Liz said.

“There are lots of things about the original series that are still there,” Ellis said, adding that the cast has the same characteristics. “The Gladiators are larger-than-life. They have different names but are the same big characters, with big bodies and big  everything!”

She later added: “I just think that people who loved the series will immediately recognise it in the new one.”

Gladiators Australia 2024 airs Sundays – Wednesday at 7:30pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.

Gladiators 2024: Meet Jaymi Morris, the woman behind Chaos who can deadlift a car

It goes without saying that all of the Gladiators cast are strong, but Jaymi Morris takes it to a whole new level.

The Nowra native is the fourth strongest female powerlifter in the world and the largest deadlift record holder under 90kg.

One of her flashiest accomplishments is lifting an actual car while in Russia. Jaymi told ABC that the organisers of the event put a rack on the front of the car to help her lift it.

“They put the wheels on [the bar] and then you lift the deadlift bar and it basically just picks the end of the car up,” she explained.

“Depending on how far you drive the car up, the ramp it makes the weight change. So I put on a little bit of a show for the Russians.”

“For me, it wasn’t that hard, but they were very impressed,” she humbly added.

She’s also pulled a huge truck.

“When I won New South Wales strongest woman. I was harnessed up to a 10 ton truck and I basically had to pull a rope [to pull the truck]. You have to just keep the momentum going.”

Jaymi Morris. GoFundMe.

Jaymi’s rank as the world’s strongest woman

Jaymi is currently sitting at number nine as the strongest woman in the world. She’s number three in her weight class internationally.

“In Australia, in my weight class, I’m number one, and in Australia of all time, I’m number two,” she said.

Jaymi Morris. Instagram.

How did Jaymi get into powerlifting?

Jaymi only started powerlifting eight years ago after realising she was very strong but “kind of unfit”.

“I taught myself how to deadlift 160 kilos,” she said.

“I just realised I was leg pressing with one leg what people are struggling to do with two, so I thought, ‘You know what? I think I’m kind of strong.'”

Around the same time a powerlifting coach reached out to her and the rest was history.

“I basically always just keep striving for the next comp to try and be better.”

Gladiators Australia 2024 airs on Sundays at 7:30pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.

Apparently, The Block 2023 contestants haven’t seen a cent of their winnings

It’s no secret that some of The Block 2023 contestants cleaned up at the auctions, however, all of them are allegedly yet to see any money from the sales.

A source told Yahoo Lifestyle Australia that the Blockheads don’t get paid their winnings “the way audiences would think”.

“It’s not like Big Brother or Australian Idol in the early 2000s where the money would be in your account a week later,” they said. “Channel Nine doesn’t actually pay the prize money straight away. It comes into their account in blocks.”

The payment information was apparently nutted out in their contracts, but some of the contestants failed to read the fine print.

“All the contestants are told this before signing up for the competition, but at that stage of the process, excited applicants don’t really turn their nose up when reading that part of their contract,” the insider continues.”

The Block. Nine.

Why don’t the contestants get paid immediately?

Of course, like any house sale, there is usually a chunk of time before the owner receives the money. Most sales require a cooling-off period and a settlement period, which can take several weeks, and sometimes months.

“There are quite a few processes that need to be completed before the money can be exchanged,” the source adds.

However, the move to hold onto the funds may also be a way for producers to make sure the contestants don’t break their contracts when speaking to the press.

“And while it is a lengthy process, it does make you wonder if this is a tactic to keep their contestants in line for longer and make sure the secrets of The Block are kept quiet while contestants are still in the media.

The Block. Nine.

The contestants are struggling to fund their lifestyles

Thanks to the popularity of the show, the Blockheads were catapulted from anonymity into a world where they were recognised while walking down the street.

After the auctions aired, most of the contestants were in demand at events and appearances and adopted a pretty high-flying lifestyle. However, without any of their winnings in the bank, they had to fund their social outings themselves.

“Their lives have been thrown into complete chaos, and the perception that some of these contestants are now millionaires couldn’t be further from the truth,” the insider said.

“Some of these contestants have been really struggling to keep up with their usual spending. Their friends and family treat them like millionaires. However, it is fair to expect that these guys have less cash flow than they usually would.”

“They all want their money,” the insider confirms, adding: “The realities are setting in for sure.”

How much did The Block 2023 contestants win?

Four of the five houses up at the auction sold, and those sales scored money for each team of contestants.

Ash’s and Leah’s house was passed over on the day, and it still hasn’t sold.

The house that sold at auction went for the following amounts:

“What an absolute load of c**p!”: Home and Away fans call out a puzzling detail about Eden

Home and Away fans have been left bemused about spotting after spotting a strange detail on a recent episode.

Home and Away returned to screens on Monday, January 8th and the show picked up from where it left off in the season finale; with Eden (Stephanie Panozzo) missing.

Cash (Nicholas Cartwright) very quickly organised a search party for her, and fans felt that it was a little too quick.

“I thought you had to wait 24 hours before a person is reported missing. The search party got there pretty quickly lol,” one viewer wrote on social media, with another person adding: “What an absolute load of crap!”.

Cash looking for Eden on Home and Away
Nick Cartwright is front and centre in storylines as Home and Away returns for 2024.

What happened to Eden?

Eden went missing while on a camping trip with her boyfriend Cash.

Before the break, she was last season when sneaking into the bush to go to the bathroom. During the walk, she came across two men digging a hole in the middle of the night and was knocked out and taken away by them.

Earlier in the day, the kidnapper’s car had collided with a motorbike, which was driven by Remi (Adam Rowland). After hitting him, the drivers checked on Remi and thought that he was dead, so they put his body in the car and planned to bury him, hence why they were digging the hole.

In the first of the 2024 episodes, Remi showed signs of life and Eden convinced the men to drop him on the side of the road and call an ambulance.

Meanwhile, her boyfriend Cash launched a search party for her and fortunately, she was found before the men tried to fulfil their plan of killing her.

Eden’s missing posters

Eden on Home and Away

Channel Seven rolled out an intriguing ad campaign in regards to the season’s finale.

They published ‘missing’ posters of Eden, with a real phone number to call. Fans who called the number were able to hear Eden’s final phone call.

“We’re thrilled with the engagement and impact this campaign has driven so far and excited to spearhead an immersive, out-of-the-box creative campaign for Home and Away,” said Larissa Ozard, Seven’s Director of Marketing – Brand, Product and Trade.

“It’s in no small way thanks to some brilliant creative from Nina Kendall and execution by Marni Crutchley and team, who have been able to deliver a campaign to get the nation talking while sweating earned and owned channels.”

While some of the fans loved the interactive touch, some others felt that it was disrespectful to families who are searching for their missing loved ones in real life.

Home and Away airs Monday to Thursday on Channel 7 and 7Plus at 7pm.

Selena Gomez reveals exactly what she and Taylor Swift were gossiping about at the Golden Globes

Selena Gomez has set the record straight about what she and Taylor Swift were gossiping about at the Golden Globes, and, no, it wasn’t Timothee Chalamet.

ICYMI, Selena and Taylor were snapped having quite the chinwag at the event, and a lip reader claimed that they were talking about Timothee. He said Selena told Taylor she’d asked for a photo with the Wonka actor, and his girlfriend Kylie Jenner had said no.

Taylor and Selena
Golden Globes. YouTube.

The iconic pop-culture moment caused the internet to (almost) explode. However, in true Selena style, she’s casually taken to Instagram to reveal what she and Taylor were actually talking about.

Selena commented on an E! article about the gossip sesh. “Noooooo I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up. Not that it’s anyone’s business,” she wrote.

So there you have it, the gals weren’t talking about Kylie and Timothee after all.

Timothee Chalamet also commented on the beef

Timothee was approached by TMZ and asked about the rumours circulating. The photographer asked Timothee if he and Selena were cool, and he said, “yeah, of course”. He also said that there was no beef between Selena and Kylie.

What did the lip reader say?

Internet sleuths were quick to claim that Selena told Taylor that she’d been brushed off by Kylie when she asked for a photo with Timothee. Lip reader Jeremy Freeman agreed with them.

He said that Selena went up to Taylor and Keleigh Sperry (Miles Teller’s wife) at the Globes and told them: “He didn’t want a picture with me. He said no.”

He claimed that Sperry asked,” Timothee?” Selena nodded in response.

Sandor was banned from the NRL for drug use back in 2015. However, he’s now rising from the ashes and conquering the entertainment space once again.

“Bringing Phoenix to life couldn’t have been more fitting,” he told TV WEEK.

“Like many of us on the rollercoaster that is life, I’ve been through the highs and lows. Through the adversities and failures, I’ve seen the biggest growth and had the greatest lessons.”

Find out more about him.

Who did Sandor play for?

Sandor had a very successful career in NRL and played for Sydney Roosters, Penrith Panthers, Canberra Raiders, and the Melbourne Storm.

What’s this about drug use?

The Gladiator was accused of sourcing performance-enhancing drugs. The charges against Earl related between August 2, 2011 and September 12, 2011, while he was playing for the Panthers.

Sandor was found guilty of multiple charges and was given a four-year back-dated ban

He was found guilty of:

  • use of CJC-1295 (eight violations);
  • possession of CJC-1295;
  • trafficking in Somatropin;
  • trafficking in Clenbuterol;
  • attempted trafficking in SARMS;
  • attempted trafficking in testosterone.

Did Sandor return to the NRL after his ban?

He did! The NRL player returned to play for Melbourne Storm in 2018 but retired in 2020 due to an injury.

“It hasn’t always been a fairy tale story,” he told TV Week in relation to the charges. “My experiences in great teams, cultures, the highlights, the wins and overcoming major injuries have set me up for the rest of my life.”

Gladiators Australia 2024 airs on Sundays at 7:30pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.

Gladiators 2024: Meet Alethea Boon, the Commonwealth Games athlete behind Elektra

Alethea Boon has taken on the best at the Commonwealth Games and she is now battling as Elektra in the Gladiators revival.

While Elektra may be one of the smaller Gladiators in a sea of beefy co-stars, she’s still a force to be reckoned with.

Alethea was originally a gymnast

Alethea represented New Zealand in artistic gymnastics at the 1998 Commonwealth Games where she was the country’s youngest competitor in the sport.

“Ever since I watched Nikki Jenkins win gold [in the women’s vault] at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, I set my sights on making it to the Commonwealth Games for gymnastics,” Aletha told Stuff.co.nz in 2018.

She also competed at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

A serious health condition led to Alethea’s weightlifting career

Aletha suffered a blockage in the arteries of her lungs (known as a bilateral embolism) after surgery in 2010 and she was initially unable to walk due to lack of breath.

Determined to recover, the athlete focussed on building her strength before transitioning into CrossFit. Her interest in the sport led to her avid interest in weightlifting, which she was hugely successful at.

Aletha returned to the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and competed as a weightlifter.

“I was so bad at it and thought ‘why not try and learn more about it?’, so I started going to a club and competing in 2014. Started competing in weightlifting at age 30 – who would have thought?” She told Stuff.

The gladiator competed in the CrossFit Games from 2015-2020, and came 5th in the Games in 2019.

Meanwhile, she achieved two 2nd-place finishes in the Australian Weightlifting Open, and the 2017 Oceania Weightlifting Championships.

Where is Alethea from?

Boon was born in Suva, Fiji, and grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. She gave birth to her daughter eight months before becoming a Gladiator.

A source reveals what Selena Gomez was REALLY saying to Tay Tay at the Globes

Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift sent the internet into a tizzy when a lip reader claimed that the two pop stars were gossiping about Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet at the Golden Globes 2024.

ICYMI, Selena and Taylor were captured on video whispering during a commercial break at the awards, the same event where Kylie and Timothee hard launched their relationship.

Check out the clip for yourself:

Of course, fans far and wide on the internet were desperate to find out exactly what Selena and Taylor were talking about, which is when a lip reader stepped in. They claimed that Selena told her pal that she asked Timothee for a photo, and Kylie told her no.

However, a source close to Selena has since shot down the claims.

“She was absolutely not referencing anything about Timothée or Kylie,” the source told People. “[She] never even saw or spoke to them.”

What did the lip reader claim Selena said?

Internet sleuths were quick to claim that Selena told Taylor that she’d been brushed off by Kylie when she asked for a photo with Timothee. Lip-reader Jeremy Freeman agreed with them.

He said that Selena went up to Taylor and Keleigh Sperry at the Globes and told them: “He didn’t want a picture with me. He said no.”

He claimed that Sperry asked,” Timothee?” Selena nodded in response.

Does Selena Gomez have beef with Kylie Jenner?

Not directly, however, the two A-listers aren’t exactly best mates.

Selena and Taylor are extremely close friends, and unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about Taylor’s fight with Kylie’s sister Kim Kardashian.

In short, Kim’s ex-husband Kanye West referenced Taylor in a song, and she indirectly called him out for it. Kim later posted a phone call between Taylor and Kanye in which she gave him permission to use her name in the song. All hell broke loose after, and the two celebs have basically remained enemies ever since.
