MasterChef Recap Episode 49: Devastation as a fan-favourite was eliminated during the Semi-Final

It’s episode 49 of MasterChef Australia 2023 and it was a Semi-Final for the ages!

During the episode, Brent, Declan and Rhiannon were given a challenge that would test even the most seasoned professional chef with each contestant having to serve 20 diners and the judges, an entrée, main and dessert a.k.a almost 70 plates on their own!

With the backing of the season’s former contestants, chef Shannon Bennett was also on hand to mentor the competing cooks.

While Rhiannon and Declan had four hours to prep, Brent was able to use the additional 30 minutes that he had won during the Curtis Stone cook-along.

The semi-finalists. Ten

Brent’s Cook and the judging

Brent started strong with a menu that perfectly showcased his cooking style.

His entrée was Charred Octopus, XO sauce and Pickled Daikon, which the judges agreed was perfectly executed.

Brent’s entree. Ten

For his main, Brent made Pork belly, topped with a Savoury Pork Sauce and Charred Salsa. Even though Shannon was concerned about how he was going to cook it, Brent proved him wrong with a dish that had the judges licking their lips!

Brent’s main. Ten

For his dessert, Brent kept it simple, creating a Toasted Coconut Ice Cream with Pickled Mango and Tapioca Pearls. The judges were pleased overall; however, thought it was a little too sweet.

Brent’s dessert. Ten

Rhiannon’s cook and the judging

For her entree, Rhiannon created Betel Leaf Scallop, Thai Green Gel and Bitter Melon, cooking the seafood to order for each plate to ensure warm scallops. The judges were impressed and praised her beautiful presentation and execution.

Rhiannon’s entree. Ten

Her Massaman Style Beef Short Rib dish for her main; however, wasn’t as strong as she struggled with her first potato concept and then created a sauce that was over-spiced. The judges did like the tender ribs and crispy potato pivot.

Rhiannon’s main. Ten

Then, it was time for dessert. Rhiannon produced a Lemongrass Panna Cotta with Tropical Fruit and Finger Lime Syrup. Her Panna Cotta had the “perfect wobble” and the judges were impressed by the flavour of the dish.

Rhiannon’s dessert. Ten

Declan’s cook and the judging

When Declan revealed his ambitious menu, the judges were concerned. His entree — an Elevated take on prawn toast, with Caviar topped Scampi was ultimately disappointing given the overwhelming aromats in the scampi mix.

Declan’s entree. Ten

For his main, Declan opted for Blue-Eye Trevalla with Green Curry, Steamed Rice and Thai Eggplant. Like Rhiannon, he cooked his fish to order with crispy skin and wowed the judges with his perfectly cooked fish. However, his curry was overcooked and lacked vibrancy.

Declan’s main. Ten

Declan then showed off his choux-pastry skills making Choux Buns with a Pandan Coconut Crème Pâtissier, Charred Pineapple and Tamarind Caramel.

The judges commended his effort and agreed his choux was perfect but his custard was undercooked.

The Verdict

While Rhiannon delivered the best entrée and Brent the best main, Declan’s dessert failed to completely impress, the only thing that would save his spot. While his choux was “10/10”, his custard was undercooked and chalky and his fate was sealed.

Declan became the final contestant eliminated from the competition before the July 16 Grand Final.

After the verdict had been announced, the Judges called Robbie (the oldest cook in the season) over, who said he was proud of his mate whom he’d formed a special bond with. Like a proud dad, he had tears in his eyes and struggled through a little speech praising the youngest cook in the competition.

Robbie and Declan. Ten

“Declan is his name and fish is his game!” Judge Mel Leong said to applause.

Bye, Declan. We love you!

Interview: Melissa Leong and Andy Allen on Brent’s return to the MasterChef kitchen

MasterChef Australia will not only see the return of judges the Melissa LeongAndy Allen and the late Jock Zonfrillo, but also 2021 contestant Brent Draper who left his season to look after his mental health.

Now, in an interview with Chattr before the series premiere and before the devastating passing of Zonfrillo, Leong and Allen reflected on what his return to the show really means.

“It’s a really wonderful platform to be able to be real, to tell the stories of who we are,” Leong said.

“Every human on this planet has their own unique set of experiences. For Brent to be brave enough to have put his hand up in his season and say, ‘Look, this is not where I need to be right now, I need to prioritise my health, my wellness, my family, and get good with who I am.’”

Brent Draper. MasterChef. 10.

Brent Draper’s story “normalises conversations” about mental health

Almost two years after his exit, Leong revealed that Draper, a dad-of-one, has come back “firing on all cylinders” and was “thoroughly comfortable with the work that he has put into himself.”

“It’s a real testament to who he is, but also to the commonality that we all share, which is that we all struggle. We’ve all had times in our lives that we have not felt our finest and isn’t it a great thing to normalise conversations about how we should prioritise? Getting good with who we are and that way we can thrive in the best possible way.”

Meanwhile, Allen said that Draper’s return was a good opportunity to personally “check” himself.

“He’s super inspirational,” Allen said. “And to the point that like, I don’t really struggle with mental health, so to speak… I lead a lovely life. I don’t struggle with mental health, but there’s having that self awareness and just being able to go, ‘I could be doing better in this area,’ whether it be being a brother, being a son, being a husband.

MasterChef Brent
Brent alongside some of his former cast-mates. 10.

“There’s always things, that you mightn’t be deep in the darkness, but you can always be better. And I think that it was really touching for me because immediately I was checking myself and I think that not just every male but every every human out there. It just doesn’t hurt to give yourself check.”

Leong added: “Normalising conversations that maybe in generations past haven’t been at the forefront, I think, is a wonderful thing. Being real with each other is is something that I take great pride in. Like Andy said, I think he hit the the nail on the head. There is self awareness in knowing how you navigate the world, but also being aware of how other people are navigating the world and where they are in their own experience of becoming aware of how they’re going through life.”

What happened to Brent during MasterChef Australia 2021?

On June 13 2021, Draper left MasterChef Australia on his own accord.

After a combination of the pressures of the show and the separation from his family, the experience had left him in a dark place.

“I’ve just got nothing left,” he told host Zonfrillo.

By the end of the episode, he had quit the competition, leaving his fellow contestants and the judges in tears and a LifeLine message had been displayed across the screen.

In an interview with The Guardian at the time, Draper said that he “was really struggling mentally and physically” in the last few weeks of the competition.

“I was struggling to sleep and having a lot of panic attacks during the night. It really started to show; even though I was trying my hardest to mask it, those around me knew I wasn’t OK.

brent draper
Brent. 10.

“My best support came from my fellow contestants, the judges and, most of all, my wife.”

By the time publicity had begun for the series, Draper admitted he was in a better place.

“I’m stoked to say I’m feeling like I’m back on track and through the thick of it,” he said over email. “I’ve spent the last couple of months seeing a psychologist, my doctor, and doing the things I love that ground me like surfing, spending time with [wife] Shonleigh and [son] Alfie, cooking and eating food with my mates.”

Ben’s emotional post to mark Mental Health Week

On June 20, 2021, Draper took to Instagram to share an emotional post.

“With the last day of Men’s Mental Health Week wrapping up I wanted to share two photos to show that sometimes what’s visible on the outside isn’t always representing what’s happening on the inside!”

“These photos were taken the same day – one by the MasterChef photographer and the other by my wife. My wife took screen shots all the way through my journey without me knowing, to show me when I got home the good times and the tough times. This is a lesson for every one of us to really check in on our mates because we never know what’s going on behind closed doors!”

The Block 2023 cast: Meet the five Blockhead couples battling it out on the retro season

There are a few secret weapons amongst this year’s The Block cast; one Blockhead is a builder while another is an architect.

The five pairs of contestants are all couples except for one, which is the sister duo of Eliza and Liberty.

The teams of contestants will go head to head as they renovate an old house, room by room, and the judges will decide which is superior at the room reveal. The contestants who impress the judges the most each week will receive extra money in their budget, allowing them to make more extensive renovations.

However, the final winner will be decided on auction day. All of the houses will have a reserve set, and the couple who’s house sells for the most wins and gets to get the amount over reserve that the house sold. Plus, the winners will receive an extra $100,000 cash prize.

Meet the cast of The Block 2023:

Steph and Gian

The Block 2023 cast members

Architect Steph (27) and start-up worker Gian (27) are a couple from NSW.

Leah and Ash

Project manager Kristy (34) and safety officer Brett (34) are a couple from SA.

Kyle and Leslie

Firefighter Kyle (36) and teaching aide Leslie (34) are parents from WA.

What’s the theme this year?

The contestants are revamping five houses from the 1950s on the aptly named Charming Street in Hampton East, Victoria. Each week the judges will evaluate their rooms, and the pair with the house that sells for the most at the auction will win the competition.

The Block season 19 will premiere in 2023 on Channel Nine and 9Now.

MasterChef Recap Episode 48: The top three get flustered as they try to keep up with Curtis Stone

It’s episode 48 of MasterChef Australia 2023 and Curtis Stone has returned to lead the top three in making a Scotch Fillet with Red Wine Sauce, Pomme Purée, and Roasted Bone Marrow.

The catch is that Curtis will be working at top speed, and Declan, Brent, and Rhiannon must keep up with him. If they don’t, they won’t know how to cook the dish. Plus, after the acclaimed chef finishes his cook, the contestants will only have an additional ten seconds to finish theirs.

MasterChef. Ten.

The winner’s dish will have to look and taste like Curtis’s, and that chosen cook wins the massive advantage of having an extra thirty minutes in the semi-final cook-off.

The Cook

For the first step, Curtis guided the three contenders as he cut and deboned his own rib eye from a huge scotch fillet. Declan was a bit knife happy and ended up removing too much fat from his. However, Curtis was impressed with Rhiannon and Brent’s cuts.

MasterChef. Ten.

Despite his haphazard start, Declan was leading the charge and managed to keep up with Curtis’s rapid paste. However, things start to go wrong for the Carpenter when he realised the buttermilk for his Pomme Puree was a completely different consistency to Curtis’s. Upon the Michelin-starred chef’s recommendations, Declan started his buttermilk again from scratch, which cost him a significant amount of time.

Meanwhile, Rhiannon fell quite far behind at the beginning of the cook but managed to catch up to Curtis about halfway through. Brent kept a close pace with the chef, and headed over to his bench multiple times to make sure that his ingredients and dishes were matching up.

The judging

The task was for the Home Cooks’ dish to taste and look as similar to Curtis’s as possible. So, naturally, they tasted his dish first to have it as a benchmark.

Curtis’s dish. MasterChef.

First up for judgment was Rhiannon’s dish. Melissa Leong said that the marrow was “very healthy” looking and Andy Allen commented that the onion jam was “really nicely done”. However, Curtis said that “sadly, the mash was a little grainy” and the dish was underseasoned.

Rhiannon’s dish. MasterChef.

Declan was next, and Andy Allen commended his choice to re-do the buttermilk but said the onions were a little raw and that too much fat was cut off the steak during the butchering.

Jock Zonfrillo agreed but said that the steak and bone marrow was cooked “really well”.

Declan’s dish. MasterChef.

Brent was last to the judges’ bench and Curtis said “All in all, Brent’s done a good job.”

Meanwhile, Jock “couldn’t agree more” with Curtis, adding that the sauce was beautifully emulsified and said the highlight was the steak.

Brent’s dish. MasterChef.

The Verdict

The judges all agreed that Brent’s dish was the closest in presentation and taste to Curtis’s, and crowned him the winner of the task – and the advantage.

MasterChef Australia airs Sunday – Thursday at 7.30pm on 10 and 10Play.

Rush 2023 Recap Episode Five: One team gets lost as another Traveller drops out of the race

It’s episode five of Rush Australia 2023 and the Travellers have been dropped in Thailand, but first some updates on the cast.

After disappearing from episode four due to personal reasons, Team Gold’s CK is back, joining Lola in a race to the Escape Zone; however, in a turn of events, Tommy from Team Navy has had to leave the competition (also due to personal reasons), flying back to Australia to be with his family.

As the remaining contestants remove their sensory deprivation gear, they are met with flashing lights and the electro beats of Bangkok’s party central – Khaosan Road.

Nine

After a little boogie to get into the spirit of the atmosphere, the teams receive a message from host David Genat (DG).

“At the tallest tree in the centre of town, you’ll find me on the roof, just don’t look down,” it read.

CK figures out the clue first, telling Lola they need to head to the Banyan Tree Hotel. Both Team Navy and Team Gold raced to meet DG; however, Team Scarlet lagged behind. Stopping for snacks thanks to Fiona, Hamish was not happy and because they misinterpret the clue, they head off in the wrong direction.

Lola and CK reach DG first and he puts them on a flight that takes them 160km away, to the picturesque Chicken Island.

The Mission

“You’ll need to catch a flight to down south to Krabi and make your way to Khamin Cave once there you’ll need to find and retrieve a traditional Thai garland hidden inside the cave,” DG says.

Team Scarlet arrives last and with 50 minutes before the gate closes, Hamish realises he’s lost the dossier of info due to an open backpack, but luckily, it’s found a few metres up the road.

Hamish, Fiona and Adam. Nine

Once they arrive at their destination, they decide to enter 25km away from the entrance point and once again, it’s Hamish taking the lead.

The Escape Zone

While Team Navy and Team Gold arrive safely at the Escape Zone, Team Scarlet is, well, lost and DG has to come to their rescue, meaning that one of them will go home.

Fiona decides that the boys should finish the race without her, subsequently eliminating herself.

Rush airs on Sunday at 7:00pm and continues Monday and Tuesday at 7:30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

Interview: MasterChef’s Theo and Declan were roomies and frankly, their friendship is #goals

Off the back of one of the most heartwarming moments in the history of the show, MasterChef Australia 2023’s Theo Loizou has opened up about the close friendship that he and Declan Cleary share.

During episode 47, Theo grew increasingly frustrated while attempting to remove the membrane from a squid. When Declan noticed his friend’s – and competitor’s – struggle, he took time out of his own cook to show him how to do it. The move could have easily cost Declan the competition. However, it was Theo that was sent home.

Looking back at Declan’s selfless move, Theo told us just how much it meant to him.

“It means a lot. He’s just so like that, he’s a great guy. There’s not a bad bone in his body. So, I’m very grateful to him,” he said in an interview with Chattr post-elimination.

“I’m really, really happy that he came in and helped me out but he didn’t have to walk over and give up time. It could have ruined his dish too and that would have been horrible, so I’m glad it didn’t.”

Declan and Theo on Masterchef
Declan helping Theo. MasterChef.

Theo also revealed that he and Declan forged a close friendship throughout the entirety of the show.

“We slept in the same bed actually,” he joked. “Nah, [we were] just roomies, which was fun.”

“He was my roommate for pretty much most of the whole time we were there. I taught him some things, he taught me some things and we’ve had each other’s back,” he added.

Who does Theo want to will win MasterChef?

Considering their close friendship, it wouldn’t be exactly surprising for Theo to be cheering Declan on for the win. However, the Home Cook said that he believes Brent Draper is the most talented of the three contestants left.

Brent and Declan. MasterChef.

“I’ve got no favourite in terms of who I’d want more, but I think as a cook, Brent is the best of the three. I think I think Declan has grown more than anyone else in the competition. So [I want] one of those two [to win], for sure,” he said.

Million Dollar Island episode 11: 17 thoughts I had watching an “arrogant pr**k” try to take control

It’s Million Dollar Island Australia episode 11 and we’ve gone from a hundred hopefuls to just seventeen survivors.

After (very openly) battling hunger and grueling trials, Jordan emerged victorious and earned the power to steer the game. But, did he let the power go to his head?

Here are 17 thoughts I had during episode eleven of Million Dollar Island Australia, episode seven!

1. Look, I’ve gotta give it to Brett for how great he is at being a reality TV villain.

2. Don’t fall for it Vine Camp! Jordan’s going to take your food and put you up for elimination anyway.

3. It’s the first I’ve heard Matty from Vine Camp speak TBH but production should have given him more screen time earlier. I love how he tells Jordan point-blank that he doesn’t trust him not to nominate him despite the food deal… But he hands over the grub anyway.

4. Now he’s calling Jordan an “arrogant pr*ck”. Matty for president.

Matt rolling his eyes at Jordan. Million Dollar Island.

5. So far Jordan’s struck a deal with Matty and Chloe from Vine Camp and Brett from Top Camp to not nominate them, but, fortunately, our favourite villain AKA Brett has taken the promise with a “grain of sand”.

6. Welp, in the most unsurprising news ever Jordan’s broken his promise to Matty and Chloe, but kept his to Brett, who says he’s like a “giggling school girl on spring break”.

Jordan and the food he scammed. Million Dollar Island.

7. Matty’s response to his nom? He calls Jordan a “gutted dog” and has this guy been banking up savage insults the whole season?

8. The fight on the beach over Jordan’s conniving nomination is most definitely the best Million Dollar Island moment so far. IMHO, Alfa and Tess are right that Log Camp are hypocrites. After all, the rest of the camp didn’t have to eat the food from the deal if they didn’t agree with the move.

9. I stand corrected. Matty pouring water on the Log Camp’s fire so they can’t cook the food is actually best moment.

Matty throwing water on the fire. Million Dollar Island.

The Elimination Challenge and Survival Challenge

10. I guess Matty has revenge on the mind, because he’s absolutely killing this challenge.

11. That’s the look of a worried man.

Jordan when he found out Matty won the challenge. Million Dollar Island.

12. Chloe and Matty’s embrace after his win is adorbs.

Matty and Chloe embracing. Million Dollar Island.

13. Vine camp’s reaction to their fire being put out is reality TV gold. But Matty really f**ked up by not taking their flint. Boo.

14. The Survival Challenge is rope making, and none of the contestants look too stoked about it.

The Survival Challenge contestants. Million Dollar Island.

15. Simon enlisting the help of Log Camp was genius in theory because they obviously don’t want Chloe to win. Too bad he couldn’t stay awake and keep his opposition motivated.

16. With every single contestant’s rope snapped, it looks like they’re all going home. Maybe production should have made the crates a little lighter?

17. Yup, they’re all out!

It’s down to the MasterChef 2023 Top 3 and betting odds suggest the winner has leaked

With just three MasterChef Australia 2023 contestants left, we’re down to the pointy end of the competition and fans are wondering who will be crowned winner.

Well, according to betting odds, there’s one home cook clearly cut out to win.

Returnee cook Brent Draper has the highest betting odds to take out the competition at $3, and NSW carpenter Declan Cleary isn’t too far behind at $6. With a large margin, in third place is Rhiannon Anderson at $19.

Masterchef. Ten.

How to understand betting odds

Betting odds are based on dollar value. If a punter bets $1, they’d receive back the amount the contestant was listed at. For example, if someone bets $1 on Brent, they’d receive a $3 return if he won. This corresponds with the amount deposited, so $10 would turn into $30, $100 would turn into $300, and so on.

Brent. Instagram.

Can betting odds really predict the winner?

Betting odds by no means confirm that a contestant will win a reality show, however, they can often be a good indicator.

Earlier this year, betting odds suggested that Liz Parnov would win Survivor: Heros vs Villains, and she was, in fact, crowned the winner. Similarly, so, Reggie Bird was correctly pegged to win Big Brother Back To The Future. Plus, last year’s betting odds indicated that Billie McKay would win Masterchef, which she did.

Billie McKay. Instagram.

However, betting with insider knowledge is strictly forbidden and the punishments for doing so can be severe. Interestingly, this year most Australian betting sites have opted out of running bets for MasterChef Australia.

When is the finale?

The MasterChef Australia finale will air on July 16 at 7:30pm.

MasterChef Australia airs Sunday – Thursday at 7.30pm on 10 and 10Play.

MasterChef Recap Episode 47: A devastating Pressure Test sends a fan favourite home

It’s episode 47 of MasterChef Australia 2023 and it was arguably the most stressful and most shocking cook yet!

After being whisked away to the Iconic Sydney Opera House, Declan, Rhiannon and Theo were guided by Bennelong’s esteemed chef Peter Gilmore, where they witnessed the preparation of an exquisite dish.

Declan, Theo and Rhiannon.
Declan, Theo and Rhiannon. Ten

Intricate, full of components and of course visually stunning, they then had to face the daunting task of recreating it in the MasterChef kitchen without a recipe!

The top two dishes in the Pressure Test would head to the Semi-Final; however, whoever’s dish fell short, would be eliminated from the competition.

The Cook

Back in the MasterChef kitchen, the three contestants had two hours and 15 minutes to recreate four plates of Peter’s dish of Squid, Scallops and Pipis on Crispy Eggplant with XO Sauce.

Declan’s seafood prowess was evident as he multitasked to get ahead; however, after making a few errors, he refocused, regaining his composure and skillfully maneuvering through the rest of the cook.

Declan. Ten

Although Rhiannon remained calm and felt good throughout her cook, in the last few seconds, she realised her XO sauce had split; however, couldn’t do anything about it.

For Theo, the challenge proved incredibly difficult as he struggled the whole way through, particularly when it came to removing the squid membrane. After multiple attempts and a lot of wasted time, he became frustrated, losing his patience.

Now in his head, and unable to calm himself down, Andy suggested he move onto something else, so he began prepping his pipis which were a disaster, so he had to do them again. It wasn’t until our boy, Declan, left his bench to help Theo, that he finally was able to complete the step.

With only 15 minutes left on the clock, Theo rushed to complete the rest of the elements; however, his dish lacked finesse and missed some garnish elements.

The Judging

First up was Theo’s dish, whose seafood and eggplant were undercooked and his problems during prep affected the final dish.

Declan’s dish was next to be tasted by the panel of judges. They all commented that every component was lovely and the sauce and seafood were well executed.

Finally, when tasting Rhiannon’s dish, the judges could also see that her sauce had split; however, the taste and aroma were just like Peter’s.

The Verdict

Given that Declan’s dish was closest to Chef Peter’s, he secured a spot in the semi-final, running over to Brent before they could even talk to him.

The decision of who would leave came down to Rhiannon and Theo, but it was Theo’s disastrous and stressful cook that saw him leave the competition.

MasterChef Australia: Best Twitter reactions to King Declan helping Theo in Tuesday’s Pressure Test

As if he hadn’t already won the heart of the Australian public, MasterChef Australia 2023’s Declan Cleary made a gallant move by helping competitor Theo Loizou with his dish during July 11’s Pressure Test, earning him a flood of praise on Twitter.

During the feel-good episode, Theo, Declan, and Rhiannon Anderson were tasked with recreating four plates of a dish created by acclaimed Bennelong chef and restaurant owner Peter Gilmore, with the cook of the least favourite dish eliminated from the competition.

Throughout the cook, Theo struggled by removing the membrane from the squid he was cooking. Although Rhiannon tried to help him from her own bench, it wasn’t until Declan headed over and showed him the way, that Theo was able to grasp the dish.

The empathetic move could have cost Declan the game, and because of this Twitter users were here for his selfless act.

Here are some of the best reactions:

Interview: MAFS’ Evelyn Ellis admits why she’s nervous to introduce Duncan to her parents

Despite not being matched together by the ‘experts’ Duncan James and Evelyn Ellis are undoubtedly the most popular couple to come out of this year’s season of Married at First Sight Australia 2023.

After breaking up with their TV partners, the two reality stars dropped a tonne of easter eggs about their budding relationship on social media, before confirming it in an interview in May.

Duncan and Evelyn. Instagram.

The pair have since admitted that they’ve been together since February; however, in an interview with Chattr before her second outing on Nine’s Getaway, she revealed that she was yet to introduce her new boo to her family.

“I haven’t met the family yet and he hasn’t met my mum and dad yet,” she said.

Evelyn then explained that she places a lot of importance on the approval of her parents.

“He’s excited… But I’m a little bit more nervous about it. I come from a strong Asian background and meeting a significant other and introducing them to the parents is a pretty big thing, approval is a lot.

“Even though if they were like, ‘No [we don’t like him]’. I’d be like, ‘Too bad’. But still, approval in Asian cultures is everything and I kind of take that on myself and assume other parents are like that when they’re not.

“I’m sure everything is going to be wonderful. I just needed a minute for things to calm down a little bit before I do that because there’s just a lot going on.”

Has Evelyn met any of Duncan’s family?

The TV personality hasn’t met her boyfriend’s parents yet, but she has met both of his sisters.

“Last time I saw Renee, I looked at her I’m like, I went ‘Holy sh*t. You’re Duncan with long hair and boobs?'” She laughed. In fact, Renee joined her and Duncan during the July 8 Getaway episode.

“They look exactly the same, I’m telling you. Lauren, his oldest sister is also stunning. The genetics in that family is robbery.”

Duncan and his sister Renee. Instagram.

What is Evelyn doing now?

Shortly after this year’s season of MAFS wrapped, Evelyn announced that she had a new gig as a guest host on the popular travel show.

“I think they maybe thought that Evelyn would be entertaining for a minute or two, and so I jumped on and had lots of fun and hopefully I get to do it again. That’s all you can really ask for in this industry,” she said.

Rush 2023 Recap Episode Four: The Travellers worship rats in India before someone is sent packing

It’s episode four of Rush Australia 2023 and tonight, there’s rat worshipping, a game of chance and a team favourite is sent packing.

After the first four eliminations, Team Gold, Team Scarlet and Team Navy are neck-a-neck when it comes to Travellers and now, they’re being smacked in the face with colourful powder at Holi Festival in Pushkar, India.

Nine

Among the absolute joyful chaos, Lola and Saxon are confused as to where CK is, who is nowhere to be found. But before they can stress about it any longer, a message comes through on everyone’s watch.

“In the city of the pink lies a palace so breezy, windows aplenty, catch a train to make it easy,” it read.

Catching all different modes of transport to get to David Genat (DG), the three teams all arrive at the same time and it’s here that CK’s absence is explained.

“Unfortunately due to personal reasons, CK wasn’t able to join you in India. He’s devastated obviously,” DG said.

While not there for this leg, he will still be in the competition, meaning that the elimination this time round will be up to chance and not a vote.

Lola and Saxon, who are pretty freaking cute, use the alone time to work on their budding romance

Lola and Saxon. Nine

The first two missions

Each team must attend a traditional Indian wedding at Samode Palace and take a photo with the bride and groom, while also dressing the part in traditional Indian attire.

Then, they must take a journey west to the Karni Mata Temple, where they are to walk into the centre of the temple and make an offering to the locals who live there.

While it seems pretty straightforward, it’s not what it seems as the “locals” are in fact RATS.

Nine

Karni Mata Temple (in the Indian state of Rajasthan) has over 20,000 black rats, who live within the temple’s walls. It turns out rats are a symbol of the Goddess Durga.

In another twist, a local (the human kind and not the rat kind) tells Hamish from Team Scarlet that they will so need to drink from the same milk bowl as the animal, as the milk is thought to be blessed and will protect them from harm and disease.

The Escape Zone

After completing their missions, lovebirds Saxon and Lola are the last contestants to reach DG at the Escape Zone at the Gajner Palace.

DG says that a game of chance, Rush Roulette, will determine who goes home.

With three smoke flares in his hands, two green and one red, the pair must choose one each and the other will be representing CK. Whoever chooses the red one, will be sent home.

Lola’s turns green, while Saxon’s — who swapped his flare at the last second — turns red, meaning his journey was over.

David Genat, Lola and Saxon. Nine

“I’m devastated but I’m so happy to have been afforded the opportunity,” he said.

“I’ve had such a groovy ride, it’s been awesome to have been placed in Team Gold and I hope one of them wins.”

Rush airs on Monday and Tuesday at 7:30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

What to expect from the star-studded series adaption of cult PlayStation game Twisted Metal

The brand new trailer for the TV series adaption of the cult PlayStation game Twisted Metal has dropped, and it looks to be the perfect balance of action and light-hearted drama.

For the uninitiated, Twisted Metal is a hugely popular video game that was released way back in 1996 on *shock horror* Windows PC, and advanced to Play Station, as well as having had spin-off games created. It remained popular for over a decade, and the last Twisted Metal game was dropped in 2012.

Now, what feels like light years on from Twisted Metal’s height of popularity, a series is being released that follows the vague storyline of the game, and it’s created by the dark and wacky minds behind Deadpool and Zombieland.

Who’s in it?

Anthony Mackie plays the starring role of John Doe, while Stephanie Beatriz plays co-lead Quiet.

Stephanie Beatriz in Twisted Metal. Stan.

They’re joined by Neve CampbellThomas Haden Church, Will Arnett, and Joe Seanoa. Tahj Vaughans, Chelle Ramos, Michael Carollo, Jamie Neumann, and Jaren Bankens all have recurring roles in Twisted Metal.

What’s the series about?

Twisted Metal is a fast-paced action comedy series that follows a motor-mouthed outsider (Mackie) as he’s offered a chance at a better life. However, there’s a catch. He’s told he’ll only get it if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

So, he enlists the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief (Beatriz). Along the way, they face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction, as well as a myriad of other dangers on the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.

Million Dollar Island recap episode 10: 15 thoughts I had watching the contestants in finals week

It’s Million Dollar Island Australia 2023 episode 10 and we’re down to just 24 contenders.

With the million-dollar jackpot on the line, it’s Finals Week, and sole Rock Camp camp survivor Tess now holds the reins and gets to choose who is tossed into the battleground. Meanwhile, Vine Camp clings to its supplies while Log Camp (once again) spends the majority of the episode complaining about their lack of food.

Here are 15 thoughts I had while watching episode 10 of Million Dollar Island Australia 2023.

1. Brett is suss that Alex from Top Camp has been taking food over to competitor’s Log Camp. Why… would she do that?

2. Tess is nominating this week and I’m wondering if she’s forgiven Brett or if she’s still planning on vindicating her fallen camp by taking him down?

3. Tess offers to keep Log Camp safe in exchange for some of their food. However, Log Camp wants to go in the elimination. So, instead of having a poker face and keeping their own food and consequently being nominated, Log Camp offers food in exchange for nomination. Make it make sense?

4. Noms are done and I guess Brett’s been forgiven by Tess. How does this man keep slipping through?

Million Dollar Island. Seven.

The Eliminaiton Challenge

5. This challenge is like real-life gladiators and I’m here for it.

Million Dollar Island. Seven.

6. Liam Hemsworth’s twin, AKA Jordan, takes out the very physical challenge, despite saying that he barely had enough energy to make it to the bathroom earlier that day.

7. How juicy, we have a traitor in our midst. Alex is feeding info from Top Camp to Vine Camp before the Survival challenge.

8. Apparently, Top Camp has been stealing Vine Camp’s food and Chloe is not stoked about it.

Million Dollar Island. Seven.

9. Why isn’t Brett piping up about the food-stealing-gate? Very unlike him. I guess he’s… busy.

Million Dollar Island. Seven.

Survival Challenge

10. It’s a cooking challenge and one of the contestants (Alex) is a chef. Sounds a little rigged, no?

11. I feel like I’m watching an outback special of MasterChef.

Million Dollar Island. Seven.

12. The Survival Challenge is being judged by challenge winner Jordan, who we all know is very hungry. Could this mean that Jack is in with a fighting chance because his meal is the biggest?

13. Wrong on both accounts, Cheffy a.k.a Alex and Jack are out and Chloe is the winner of the Survival Challenge.

Elimination

14. Brett just possibly delivered one of the most iconic lines of the entire season. “I think Log Camp just needs to have a little teaspoon of cement and harden up,” he said, given their constant whining over food.

15. Two people leave and Alice is saved. How anti-climactic.

Million Dollar Island Australia continues on July 11 at 7.30pm on 7 and 7Plus.

MasterChef Recap Episode 46: One contestant becomes the first cook through to Semi-Final

It’s episode 46 of MasterChef Australia 2023 and one cook has won a spot in the Semi-Final.

The top four — Brent, Declan, Rhiannon and Theo — have been fighting hard for their spot in Finals Week, and now, the Monday Mystery Box would hold the key to the Semi-Final.

Beneath the lids lay cherished photos of their families, as well as heart-warming letters from home, accompanied by an envelope revealing a dish their families miss the most.

With 75 minutes on the clock, the contestants had to recreate their family’s chosen dish, with the creator of the top dish safe, and the other three cooks destined to face Tuesday’s nerve-wracking Pressure Test, where someone will be sent home.

Judging the dishes

Brent was up for first to the judges. His Balinese Braised Pork Belly was called “unbelievable” by Jock Zonfrillo, while Mel Leong said he understood how to treat the “succulent” pork and had flavours upon flavours. Andy Allen added said there probably weren’t many people who could make a comeback like he did. Jock, holding back tears, said: “Mate, I’m so proud of you.”

Brent’s dish. Ten

Next up was Rhiannon (who was concerned about her noodles given that she had to use packet ones because her homemade ones didn’t work out”) with her Prawn Laksa.

Mel said it was a “wonderful modern interpretation of Laksa” and she could see her signature in it. Jock said it was the right choice to focus her energies on the broth and called the Aussie touch of Finger Limes “impressive”.

Rhiannon’s dish. Ten

Our boy Declan was next with his Thai Chilli Prawns with Rice Noodles and Prawn Head Broth. He said he was concerned about going into the cook but was proud of what he achieved. Andy said that the prawns were “epic” and it was “incredibly well done”. Mel said his resilience was to be celebrated.

Finally, Theo delivered his Peri Peri Chicken with Sweet Potato Fries and Pita Bread. He wasn’t confident about his cook but Andy said it was the “best version” of the dish he had ever cooked. Period. Jock said he was proud of Theo for getting the consistency right and was impressed how far he’d come.

Theo’s dish. Ten

The Verdict

Brent’s Pork Belly was hailed as the Dish of the Day and he was the first person through to the Semi-Finals. He was in disbelief and said that it was “massive” to get through, adding that as Rhiannon would say, he was “stoked”! LOL!

Ten pairs of Fugitives are on a mission to evade being caught by the Hunters, and amongst the ranks are ex-military personnel, IT pros, and a professional boxer.

The contestants that are able to avoid capture for 21 days will make it to the extraction point and will share the $100,000 prize money.

The Hunters have been assigned to capture the Fugitives as soon as they can and have access to state-of-the-art surveillance and tracking equipment and technology.

Following on from their success in season one, chief Dr David Craig, deputy of intelligence Ben Owen, forensic psychologist Dr Karla Lopez and deputy of operations, Reece Dewar OAM are just some of the cast who have returned as Hunters for season two.

Ben, 26, and Callum, 27

With their undeniable geekiness, these two are perfectly suited to withstand endless hours together without getting tired of each other.

Ben, armed with his IT expertise, aims to uncover the data loopholes the Hunters are chasing while Callum, boasting a blackbelt in Taekwondo, will employ his mental and physical prowess to outrun them.

Bayan, 43, and Eesha, 32

Bayan is a self-proclaimed ‘genius’, always composed and collected. He’s an Engineer by profession and has also spent seven years in the Army. Meanwhile, Eesha is an ambitious medium and a spiritual and motivational coach. Despite not being as strong as Bayan, she’s willing to go to extreme lengths to evade the Hunters and even considered shaving her head.

With their Middle Eastern connections and Bayan’s expertise from his previous army and security experience, they aim to disrupt their pursuers through misinformation campaigns, clever decoys, and strategically-placed false clues.

Cath, 54, and Kel, 59

Cath and Kel are two seasoned sexuality educators from high school days and have been inseparable for three decades. Their friendship exudes contagious joy and endearing personalities.

Being the oldest participants, they understand their physical boundaries and will rely on their life wisdom and leverage their social savvy. These ladies are not willing to give up their beloved glass of Chardy at day’s end, a habit they have no intention of abandoning while on the racecourse!

Ed, 29, and Jimi, 31

Former radio colleagues turned friends, Ed and Jimi’s initial meeting was less than harmonious as they both vied for the title of most flamboyant!

Ed, the classic “Libran”, wields his manipulative powers for good rather than evil, while Jimi shines brightly with determination, vivacity, and exceptional storytelling.

Their plan is to rely on the kindness of strangers, using their appeal and friendliness to seek help from everyday Australians – be it directions, accommodation, or even decoy.

With their flamboyant nature, witty humour, and boundless energy, both friends have always stood out – but will they be able to seamlessly blend in?

Elerrina, 38, and Sonja, 41

Sonja and Elerrina became inseparable after crossing paths at a watermelon eating contest. They are polar opposites in every aspect.

Sonja, a pocket rocket, possesses resilience, strategy, fitness, and flirtatiousness. On the other hand, Elerrina adds colours to life, isn’t athletically inclined, exudes kindness, and is the epitome of fun.

Sonja, a medical sales rep, will be calling the shots on this adventure, while Elerrina, a radio personality, embraces spontaneity and goes with the flow. Despite missing their creature comforts, like makeup, they plan to stay fabulous while on the run!

Gracie, 46, and Megan, 22

Megan and Gracie tend to radiate happiness wherever they go. With smiles that never fade, this aunt and niece duo makes the perfect team as they work together in Megan’s beauty salon.

They’re determined to win and show their families that they can survive 21 days without any fake tan or makeup!

Holly, 23, and Josh, 25.

Meet Holly and Josh, the power couple that takes competition to a whole new level.

Josh, a paramedic and rifleman in the Australian Army Reserves, knows a thing or two about surveillance, survival techniques, and escaping capture. Meanwhile, Holly, the life of the party, is a talented dancer with a knack for making heads turn. Together, they’re prepared to take on any challenge, even if it means donning disguises.

With Holly’s special effects makeup skills and Josh’s expertise in camouflage, they’ll effortlessly blend into their surroundings.

Jordan, 29, and Tharren, 53

Tharren and Jordan are a dynamic father-son duo. Tharren, a Pastor at a Juvenile Detention Centre, and Jordan, an ex-chef-turned-High-School-Teacher, join forces for a heartwarming mission. Their goal? To perform one act of kindness every day, believing that what they give will eventually come back to them.

Tharren, resourceful as ever, plans to tap into local Churches for support, potentially finding a sanctuary for the night within their sacred grounds.

Tanase, 36, and Byron, 37

These self-proclaimed “city slickers”, Byron and Tanase are siblings who moved to Melbourne together 15 years ago, from South Australia.

Tanase can tend to be impulsive and outspoken at times, Byron is strategic, calculated and even-tempered in most situations.

Whilst on the run, they will call on their support group of West African communities and Byron’s queer allies. Though not having camped before, the pair plan to embrace nature and head to the bush, with the sole aim of confusing the Hunters from the get-go.

Glenn, 50, and Taylah, 24

Glenn is a boxing coach, and Taylah is his student. They share a remarkable bond that extends beyond the ring. Taylah, the #1 Australian female boxer in the super flyweight division, finds in Glenn not only a coach but also a professional mentor.

With over 17 years of military experience as a former soldier in the Australian Army, Glenn has served in combat zones across the globe, truly living the Hunters’ lifestyle. This intriguing combination of backgrounds may just make him one of their greatest challenges.

Hunted Australia 2023 premieres on 7.30 pm on July 17 on 10 and 10Play.

MasterChef Recap Episode 45: The Top 4 were revealed as we said bye-bye to one cook

It’s episode 45 of MasterChef Australia 2023 and one person has been pipped at the post juuuuust before Finals Week.

After having travelled around regional Victoria for last week’s episodes, the remaining contestants — Brent, Cath, Rhiannon and Theo returned to the kitchen for a huge day, given that the top five would become the top four.

The challenge was a culinary tournament of epic proportions, where all but Declan (who won Immunity during episode 44), competed in two separate head-to-head duels.

With 75 minutes on the clock, and one mysterious ingredient they both must cook with, time was of the essence.

The winners of each cook-off then earned a spot in Finals Week, while the two who lost, faced off in a round two duel that sadly saw someone leave the kitchen.

Duel One

The two-round elimination began with a ‘dual duel’ where pairs were selected at random to cook head-to-head.

Cath and Theo battled it out with a dish that had to feature Dijon mustard while Brent and Rhiannon competed to create the best dish that featured anchovy.

Dijon Duel

Cath presented her Dijon Glazed Trout with Potato and Fennel Salad. Judge Mel Leong called the dish “elegant”; however, it needed more balance. Andy Allen said the sauce was great but Jock Zonfrillo said she “just missed out on the brief”.

Cath’s Dish. Ten

Theo then presented his Pan Seared Kingfish with Dijon Sauce and Dill Oil. Andy said he hit the brief “out of the park” and Jock said it was “very nice”.

Anchovy Duel

Rhiannon was the first to put up her dish, a Grilled Chicken with Anchovy Salsa. Mel said she came in “guns blazing”, delivering “brilliant food”; while Andy said the anchovy salsa was great.

Brent was up next with his Lobster and Anchovy Pasta. He was concerned about his “frantic” cook, and the Judges were left wanting once they tasted it.

Duel One — Verdict

Theo and Rhiannon were named the next two to head to Finals Week, with Cath and Brent competing in the second duel.

Duel Two — Brent and Cath

With Rhiannon and Theo safely up in the gantry, Cath and Brent battled it out in round two. With 75 minutes on the clock, they had to bring the judges their best dish of the competition.

After the cook, Cath was emotional, saying her dish was “full of love” and dedicated it to her daughters; however, Brent was first up to the Judges.

He delivered a Chicken Adobo, Brent style with Charred Corn and Cucumber Salsa.

After tasting the meal, Jock said his mouth was “still salivating” and gave him his infamous round of applause. Mel said it was “lip-smackingly…joyful” food while Andy said he was “the top of his game”.

Brent’s dish. Ten

Finally, Cath delivered her Wattle Seed Shortbread and Chocolate Parfait with a Davidson Plum Sauce and Vanilla Dippin’ Dots. She was disappointed in her own presentation, especially the parfait, which was meant to look like a dome.

Upon tasting, Mel said the flavour profile was a “classic” and there was “nothing wrong” with it but the execution wasn’t there. Jock said he was “gutted” for her while Andy said she should have cooked something she was familiar with.

The Verdict

After the final round, Cath was eliminated from the competition, with Brent, Rhiannon and Theo joining Declan in Finals Week.
