Just as Australia watched Final Vows play out last night, so did the Married at First Sight (MAFS) cast, and Steven said he was surprised to see how “cold” David was towards Alissa, by walking off before she could say her piece.
Steven explained that while the cast talks, so he already knew what everyone’s Final Vows decisions were, watching the episode back actually gives the “full story” about what happened.
“That was so unexpected when I first heard about it, because at the final Dinner Party, David was begging for Alissa’s forgiveness. So watching that back and just seeing how, I guess, done and cold David was, was a bit of a surprise,” he told Chattr.
Alissa blew up at David at the final Dinner Party, after he had a go at her for flirting at the Grass is Greener challenge. While he tried to make amends, it didn’t go down too well with Alissa.
Heading into Final Vows, Alissa appeared certain she would be the one breaking David’s heart, but he ended up dumping her first in a brutal speech before walking out of the room. The move was met with praise from fans who celebrated the groom for finally standing up for himself.
“This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion. Look, I am proud of him for standing his ground. Can’t hate a man for that. But the walking off was definitely unexpected in my opinion,” Steven dished.
“If it were me, I would probably still allow a partner to say their vows and not walk off, just due to a respect sort of thing… I can’t help but feel for Alissa that she didn’t get to say her vows at the same time. You’ve just gone through this massive experiment together, and she did take the time to write them.”
However, Steven added that at the end of the day, David knew what decision was right for him.
“I’ve got to give it to him. It is respectful how he sort of said, I’m doing this for me because I’ve got the self-respect and sort of walked away. It was very boss-like!”
How did Steven come to his MAFS Final Vows decision?
Prior to Final Vows, all of the couples were split up for four days for what’s called deliberations, and in that time, each person had the time to think about whether they wanted to stay with their partner after MAFS.
In an interview with Chattr, Steven revealed that he’d pretty much made up his mind to stay with Rachel outside the experiment before they had the time apart.
“I was pretty confident in my decision,” he said. “You have to think about it and go, what’s it going to be like leaving the safety net of the experiment and how we going to deal with this long distance and all these things? But, no, it wasn’t one of those decisions where it’s like, ‘Oh, I don’t know’, I was very confident.
“So there wasn’t much thinking [to be done before Final Vows]. Of course, you still think about it, like what’s it gonna be like? There’s a lot of what-ifs at the time. So it’s definitely not just putting my feet up and, you know, sipping coffee, like, I don’t give a damn about my decision,” he clarified.
Steven explained that he took the decision seriously, ultimately trusting his instincts rather than leaning on the other grooms for guidance.
“This is your decision. You can’t have outside influences. What Rachel and I have gone through, no one else knows. I mean, people have only seen what they’ve seen. No one really knows what happens behind closed doors and what we do. So no, I didn’t really reach out to anyone and have that influence.”
Married at First Sight (MAFS) 2026 Reunion airs Sunday and Monday on Channel 9 and 9Now.
