The Block 2026‘s Wyatt has been roasted online after making it clear he had no idea how to paint while working on his guest bedroom, and he’s now revealed why he didn’t watch a quick tutorial before putting paint on the walls.
In the episode, Wyatt admitted he’d “never painted before”, with Redditors questioning why he didn’t do a crash course in painting before coming on The Block. Now, in an exclusive interview with Chattr, Wyatt admitted that he “absolutely” regretted not doing some painting research before filming started.
“I didn’t even think about it [before], I was thinking about that the day I had to paint,” he said. “I was like, maybe I should watch something, but I just didn’t have time. Just get the paint on the wall!”
Wyatt explained why his hatchet paint job didn’t end up being too much of an issue.
“It was the undercoat, so you know, it does get like the undercoat’s pretty thin, does get covered up,” he explained.
The personal trainer added that his first day of painting was a humbling experience and revealed that he went home and did his research afterwards.
“I actually did go and watch a tutorial later that night,” he admitted. “I don’t know if they catch it on camera, but I actually did go and watch a video, and then I realised you’re supposed to cut in before you roll, and that’s when I sort of started to pick it.”
“[Before that], I’d never picked up a paint brush in my life,” he laughed. “Then it crossed my mind [in the guest room], and I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to paint’, and I have no idea. Nothing. I’ve got nothing.
“Dan comes over to the window, and he’s just looking at me, and I’m like, ‘You reckon this is good?’ And he’s just shaking his head.”
Wyatt’s girlfriend and The Block teammate Chantel backed him up, saying that painting isn’t as easy as it looks.
“Painting is such a skill! Oh my goodness! I take my hat off to the painters that do that as a profession. It is a skill.”
Luckily, Wyatt revealed that he’s come leaps and bounds since that fateful day in the guest bedroom.
“I know how to paint great now,” he told Chattr.
Why aren’t contestants aren’t allowed to paint after hours this season?
A game-changing rule was introduced this season of The Block, restricting contestants to working between 7am and 6pm on weekdays, and 9am to 3pm on Saturdays. Scott Cam revealed the new rule was imposed by the local Mount Eliza council and even applied to painting.
It’s a far cry from previous seasons, when contestants regularly pulled all-nighters after ‘tools down’ to finish painting their rooms in time for judging.
While the ban on power tools makes sense due to the noise they create for neighbours, Chattr asked Chantel why painting — a much quieter task — was also off-limits.
“I think because it’s such a prestigious area,” she told us. “I think they didn’t want to upset the neighbours. So I think initially that’s where it was stemming from, but I mean I can’t be too sure. That’s kind of just my assumption.”
Of course, on top of that, if the contestants were parked up at their houses painting all night, there would be no time for a side of drama in the share house they all live in!
“After you finish at the house, you go back to the share house, but you film for that whole time as well. So cameras don’t get pulled down till like 10 pm or till everyone’s in bed,” she added.
The Block airs on Sundays at 7pm and Monday – Wednesday at 7:30pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.
