The Block cheating
  • Courtney and Sev's wine cellar sparked outrage among The Block contestants after they secured the bespoke installation for $14,500 by classifying it as artwork rather than a retail product.
  • Lisa and Jolene accused the pair of finding a "dodgy" loophole, but Courtney and Sev defended the move, insisting they had followed the rules and simply negotiated a better deal.
  • Fans were divided online, with some calling the move "unethical" while others argued it was smart gameplay and not cheating because it had been approved by production.
  • Viewers also questioned the fairness of the judging and scoring, debating whether Courtney and Sev's strategy highlighted inconsistencies in how The Block rules are applied.

Another week, another The Block controversy.

Sunday night’s episode sparked one of the biggest debates of the season after Courtney and Sev’s luxury wine cellar became the centre of a heated argument, with fellow contestants accusing the pair of finding a “dodgy” way to slash the cost of installation.

While the showdown played out on screen, viewers quickly took the debate online, where Reddit exploded with opinions over whether the pair had cleverly played the game or crossed an ethical line.

Why Courtney and Sev’s wine cellar caused so much drama?

The controversy centred around Courtney and Sev’s custom wine cellar, which they purchased for $14,500 despite similar installations reportedly costing significantly more.

The discount was possible because the bespoke wine rack was classified as an artwork rather than a standard retail product. Unlike retail items, which are subject to The Block’s discount rules, artwork can be priced at the artist’s discretion.

When the other teams learned how little the pair had paid, Lisa wasn’t impressed, arguing the deal didn’t sit right with her, while Jolene was left furious, threatening to call a body corporate meeting if Courtney and Sev took out the win.

Courtney and Sev defended themselves, insisting they hadn’t broken any rules and had simply worked within the competition’s framework.

The gamble ultimately paid off, with guest judge Dave Franklin describing it as the best wine cellar he’d ever seen, while Darren Palmer and Shaynna Blaze also praised the installation, with Darren agreeing it was essentially a piece of art.

Fans questioned whether the loophole should have been allowed

Many viewers agreed that Courtney and Sev hadn’t technically cheated, but still felt the move crossed an ethical line.

“The wine rack is not art. They have found a loophole. Breaking the rules, no. Being unethical, yes,” one Redditor wrote.

Another argued that the show’s rulebook has become increasingly meaningless, writing, “The rules aren’t even guidelines at this point. The show just leaves everything up to the contestants and nothing really happens, so why not find loopholes?”

Others questioned why one team’s cellar could be treated as bespoke artwork while another team’s appeared to be sold as a retail product.

“The real question is why it’s bespoke art without a retail price for House 4 but not for House 1,” one fan commented.

Another viewer admitted the move may have been legal but still left a sour taste.

“It’s obviously OK in the rules, that’s why they were allowed to do it. They just always pull this stuff that’s legal but dodgy.”

The Block fans rush to Courtney and Sev’s defense

Plenty of viewers defended Courtney and Sev, arguing that if production approved the deal, it couldn’t reasonably be called cheating.

“It’s been approved. It’s within the rules, so it’s not cheating. So you have to accept it even if you don’t like it,” one fan wrote.

Others pointed out that several teams have benefited from generous discounts or challenge prizes throughout the season.

“Was Jolene getting more than 50 per cent off hers cheating? Was getting the sauna they couldn’t afford for nothing as a prize cheating?” another asked.

Several fans also believed Courtney and Sev had simply outplayed the competition.

“Courtney and Sev merely exploited a rule loophole… They negotiated a good deal for their wine rack… the girls played the game better than Jolene.”

Another commenter echoed that sentiment, writing: “The women were better negotiators, that’s all.”

The judging also came under fire

The wine cellar wasn’t the only thing viewers were debating, with plenty questioning the judges’ scores.

One fan couldn’t understand how two houses finished on the same score despite receiving very different feedback.

“The real question here is how House 1 and House 4 scored the same when the judges ripped into House 1… and the only negative they had for House 4 was the paving.”

Others felt House 4 deserved more recognition, with one writing:

“The girls clearly had a better space… that’s actually unfair.”

Another viewer also praised House 4’s response to the result, saying it highlighted “their maturity”, as they “always just accept the judges’ scores and get on with it.”

Whether viewers saw Courtney and Sev’s wine cellar as brilliant strategy or a loophole that never should have been allowed, one thing is certain: The Block has once again sparked a passionate debate among fans.

The Block airs Sunday – Wednesday on Channel 9 and 9Now.
