Married at First Sight (MAFS) bride Gia Fleur was blindsided on her wedding day when her uncle revealed during the reception that she had a daughter — a personal detail she’d planned to share privately with her husband, Scott McCristal, later in the night.
Now, in an interview with Chattr, Gia has explained why having that moment taken away from her was so upsetting, and why she wanted to wait to divulge that detail.
“I knew he didn’t have kids, I assumed that whoever I would get probably wouldn’t have kids,” she explained. “And when I saw him, I thought, ‘Oh, he’s good looking, he’s successful like me, having a kid is probably going to be like a red flag for him or something that he doesn’t want to take on’.
“I felt a bit insecure. I’ve never dated as a single mum. I was with someone for 10 years before that, so I haven’t dated anyone, so I thought, ‘Oh, it’s gonna put him off’, and I just was weary.”

Some social media users have criticised Gia for not telling Scott about her daughter straight away, arguing that it was something she should have been proud to share.
“One minute your child is your life, the next minute you want to hide it from some random you met 5 minutes ago in case he doesn’t like it. So ridiculous,” one person wrote.
However, Gia stressed to Chattr that she couldn’t be prouder to be a mum, adding that she wanted to find out what Scott was like before talking to him about her daughter.
“She’s the love of my life. I’m with her every day. I’m a full-time parent. I have full custody of my daughter, so obviously, she’s the forefront of my whole life,” She explained.
“Basically, I just didn’t want to give him everything yet. I needed to suss him out. And she’s so important to me. I don’t want them close or to know anything about each other yet, because I’m like, Well, what if this didn’t work out? You know what I mean, I was trying to protect her in a way.”

Gia reveals how hard it was to leave her daughter and go on MAFS
Gia and her daughter live in Melbourne, so when she was cast on MAFS, Gia had to pack up and relocate to Sydney for months of filming.
She told Chattr that it was a “really difficult” decision to go on the show because of the time she’d have to spend apart from her daughter. However, she knew she had to give herself a shot at finding happiness.
“I just had to FaceTime her as much as I could. And she flew up to Sydney a few times, and I went home a few times on weekends, but it was very difficult,” Gia said.
“But, I’ve been single for three years, and I had my daughter every single day of her life, and I thought I needed to do something for me where I can meet someone, and I just don’t give myself enough time, I don’t go on dating apps. And I just wanted to throw myself in the deep end and see if it could work out.”
MAFS 2026 airs Monday – Thursday on Channel 9 and 9Now.
