Love Island is one of the most popular reality TV formats in Australia and overseas, but would you watch a movie version? According to Deadline, ITV America is looking into the possibility of turning Love Island into a fictional story for the silver screen.
CEO of ITV America, David George, told the publication he has been discussing what to do with the Love Island IP, especially after it became a breakout hit in the USA.
“Why are we not taking Love Island and figuring out how we’re going to translate that into the movie world?” he said. “There may be something going there. I can’t even begin to tell you what it is, but there are those types of conversations.
“We are open to expanding the possibilities of what that brand is.”
There have been the odd reality TV shows turned into movies in the past, but it’s a rare occurrence. The most popular series that became a box office success was Jackass, leading to multiple sequels and Johnny Knoxville’s continued career.
MTV also turned the observational reality TV show The Real World into a fictionalised satirical feature film, called The Real World Movie: The Lost Season. It focused on an obsessed fan who kidnaps The Real World reality TV cast and threatens them with explosives.

Fans react to Love Island movie idea
It looks like most fans can’t figure out what a Love Island feature film looks like, and the majority of people aren’t on board.
“Who asked for this?” one person questioned on social media.
“Look, I love the show. But a movie???! Hard pass,” another added.
“Asked all of my friends, none of them wanted this,” a third chimed in.
“We’ve gone too far, nuke the earth immediately,” another wrote.
On the flip side, there were a few fans who had some creative ideas for what a Love Island movie could look like.
“I frowned at first, but then I thought of a psychological thriller with them on an island, thinking it’s a reality show, but then the challenges start, and the couples start getting picked off if they fail,” a fan suggested.
“This needs to be Surf’s Up but a rom-com. Like it needs to be simultaneously completely serious and entirely unserious. That’s the only angle that’ll work,” another added.
“Look, a rom-com about two people falling in love on a dating reality show could be very fun. Just get the right creative team,” a third said.
