The world of reality TV was rocked by the news that Farmer Wants a Wife 2026’s only success story, Farmer Zac and Maya, had sadly broken up.
The couple made the announcement with a video shared to socials of their fond memories together from the show.
Speaking exclusively to Chattr in a joint interview, the couple revealed they decided to end their relationship just last week.
“It was pretty recent that we actually ended things,” Zac revealed. “Because it was long distance, we definitely checked in with each other quite a lot, just to see how things were going and only came to the decision last week. We definitely were making things work leading up to it for the couple [of] weeks.”
Maya added: “I think maybe in the last month and a bit, we’ve obviously, again, as Zac said, we do check in quite a fair bit, and even after the breakup, we still check in with each other. But within the last month we realised that the relationship had taken a little bit of a turn, and it was nor Zac or I’s fault, but it was just the fact that long distance was doing its thing, and it just kind of made a little bit of a divide between us. And then, as Zac said, last week we decided to end it.”
In their breakup post, the caption provided the following details of their split: “Navigating our relationship while being long-distance proved to be no easy journey. The timing for us to make that next move wasn’t right, and unfortunately, this shifted the relationship. We have therefore decided to go our separate ways.”
In our interview, the couple elaborated on why now was the right time to end things.
“We actually had a date and a bit of a time frame in our mind that [we were going to move in together]. But my sister’s getting married next month, and I can’t move before then, so the timing wasn’t right,” Maya said.
They went on to say that their relationship was going well until the show started to air and the pressure of having things play out in the public eye took somewhat of a toll.
“It definitely had its moments,” Zac said. “When the show wasn’t running, [our relationship] was awesome, then when the show started there was more pressure.”
Maya added: “I didn’t necessarily feel the pressure during the relationship, it’s more, I guess, now. Everybody has their opinion, which is so fair enough, because people were following us but it’s also like, we’re only human.”
Zac went on to say that “breakups are hard enough as it is, but having to do it in the public eye [was tricky],” although he expressed that they’re lucky they “ended on really great terms so that’s a great tick. If we ended on bad terms, it would’ve been harder”.

Reflecting on the past 10 months since the show wrapped, the couple say they put effort into making the relationship work, even commuting to visit each other multiple times a month.
“We really, really gave it a crack. Like we’ve been speaking for 10 months now, and every week, every day, every month, we were giving it a red hot crack,” Zac told Chattr. “Because I think Maya is such a wonderful person, and just absolutely someone worth doing it for.”
“We would try and see each other twice a month,” Maya said. “We racked up those velocity points!”
The couple went on to share that when they’d visit, they’d have a “jam-packed” weekend full of family time and ending with lots of goodbye tears.
“The weekends were jam-packed, and that’s what made it tough as well,” Zac shared.
“Every time we caught up, everyone would, of course, want to see us, friends and family. And then we’d have things to do. The weekends were always just busy, busy, busy, go, go, go, because that’s what we really got to spend together. It was sort of three or four days every catch-up.”
Maya added: “But in saying that, we’ve done amazing things. We would go to the spas, and then would also spend a few nights in Melbourne City, and would go out for drinks and dinners and stuff like that. And we did everything that a normal couple would do if they were living in the same area. But it would just then mean that on the Monday morning or the Sunday afternoon, one of us would have to fly back, which just made it hard. There were lots of tears.”
“I think I cried every single time at the airport,” Zac added.
Maya reacts to the negative feedback from Farmer Wants a Wife viewers
Maya went on to address the criticism aimed at her about opting not to move from Victoria to South Australia to live with Zac.
“I understand that everyone has their own opinion, and I appreciate that,” Maya said.
“I think that long distance can work for so many people, and I’m happy for them. But unfortunately, just didn’t work for us, and so I don’t think putting negative energy out there is the right thing to do, but I also can’t control everyone, and so I just tend to keep going about my day as I do.
“But I understand why people are, I guess, confused as to why long distance didn’t work when I knew that he was interstate. But again, not everyone knows all the details of our relationship, and that’s what I want people to understand, that they don’t have all the details of everything, so I’d appreciate no judgment.”
