Australian Idol hopeful Charlie-Moon Meader was once scouted for Australia’s biggest singing competition, but at the time, the timing just wasn’t right.

Now, his dream of becoming the next Australian Idol is firmly within reach — and it’s a journey driven by the memory of his late mother, artist Dawn Meader.

Keep reading on to find out everything we know about Charlie-Moon Meader.

Who is Charlie and where is he from?

Charlie is a 31-year-old from Fremantle, Perth and is known as “Beanie Boy” on social media, with a signature look of an all-blue outfit and orange beanie to match.

He isn’t new to performing either, as he’s a regular on Perth’s live music scene, playing at venues like Mojo’s Bar, The Ellington and The Bird.

Charlie describes his sound as R&B and jazz with a cheeky blend of soul, and cites Stevie Wonder and Frank Ocean as two of his biggest musical influences.

On Instagram, Charlie already seems to have a well-established career as a singer and songwriter, with 13.2k followers, which will no doubt be climbing throughout the show.

Charlie’s emotional backstory

Charlie’s Australian Idol journey isn’t just about music — it’s deeply rooted in family.

In 2023, his mum, visual artist Dawn Meader, passed away from brain cancer after Charlie stepped away from his own dreams to care for her — something he says he’ll never regret even thought he was scouted for the show a few times, “but I was like, ‘I just can’t do it’, because I’m looking after my mum and other life commitments, he told Perth Now.

“Once she passed away, I had seen the advertising and thought I’ll give it a go this year, I’ve finally got the time to give it a chance. I’m 31, and it’s like the final roll of the dice.”

Now, he’s facing another heartbreaking chapter, with his dad currently battling the same disease.

It’s this lived experience — love, loss and resilience — that’s driving Charlie to finally take his shot, carrying both his parents with him every step of the way.

Australian Idol 2026 airs Sunday – Tuesday on Channel 7 and 7Plus.
