Fans of The Block have discovered contestant Jolene in an unexpected place — a Stan true crime documentary exploring one of Queensland’s most haunting unsolved cases.
A Reddit user recently pointed out that Jolene appears in Revealed: The Cape, a documentary investigating the mysterious disappearance of fisherman Bevin Simmonds and his 10-year-old son, Brad, who vanished while checking shark nets off Cape York in 2003.
The documentary examines the decades-long search for answers surrounding the father and son’s disappearance, delving into the impact the case has had on their loved ones and the remote community where it unfolded.
Despite an investigation that led to murder charges against a rival fisherman and his mother in 2005, both were ultimately acquitted. With no bodies, boat or murder weapon ever recovered, the case remains unresolved more than 20 years later.
Jolene appears throughout the documentary, reflecting on the devastating loss and the lasting toll it has taken on those who knew Bevin and Brad.
“He was a very motivated person. He wanted a home for his kids, he wanted to set his kids up. He had three properties and wanted to have something for them,” she says.
“If Bevin was sitting here, there’d be kids [all around him]. They wanted to be in his presence all the time.”
Later in the documentary, archival footage shows a younger Jolene attending the trial following the disappearance.
Looking back on the verdict years later, she recalls the overwhelming frustration she felt after those charged with the alleged murders were acquitted.
“I still remember the look on Michael’s face when the verdict was read and he turned around and just had this shocked look on his face. Like, that was it. And that was pretty much it,” she says.
“I remember being so angry and they came over to interview us but they were just so hellbent on Michael’s story, Michael and Joan have been acquitted of murder, but it just means Bevin and Brad were really forgotten in that moment.”
Directed by Emmy Award-nominated filmmakers Michael Ware and Justine A. Rosenthal, Revealed: The Cape combines almost two decades of research, interviews and archival material to revisit the cold case.
Rather than simply retracing the investigation, the documentary explores the lasting emotional impact the disappearance has had on Bevin and Brad’s family, while examining the complexities of life in one of Australia’s most remote regions.
For viewers who only know Jolene from The Block, her appearance in the documentary offers a glimpse into a deeply personal chapter of her life — and the ongoing search for answers in a case that continues to haunt Far North Queensland.
