The Block 2026 contestants have opened up about the very real possibility of walking away from the show with nothing, with Rick and Tayla admitting they have concerns about the current housing market.
Speaking to New Idea, Rick revealed that the contestants could potentially finish the competition without making a profit on auction day.
“There are always fears. We could all walk away with nothing here,” Rick said.
“The market’s scary at the moment.”
Despite his concerns, Rick remains confident that House Five is in a strong position, pointing to the property’s larger floor plan as a potential advantage.
“I think we’re possibly in the best position of any Block contestants, and Scott [Cam] keeps telling us how fortunate we are,” he continues.
“I’m not saying we’re going to win, but I think we’ve got a very, very good chance. [Our house] does stand out from the others.”
Rick and Tayla aren’t the only contestants thinking about what could happen when their homes go under the hammer.
Lisa and Rosco also concede that there is a chance they could fail to make a profit, but say they have no regrets about their time on The Block and remain confident in their house.
“At the end of the day, we can’t control what happens at auction,” they said.
“So I think we went into it with a clear head, we’ll be having a great experience, and there are some great outcomes from just being on the show.
“But if we come about out of it with nothing like we wouldn’t change a thing about our house. We’re very, very confident in it.”
The couple say the possibility of not turning a profit is something contestants have to be “very aware of” when signing up for The Block, given the unpredictable nature of a live auction.
“It would be devastating for all that work just to sit there, but at the same time, maybe they still let us stay in the house for a while, so we might just go and spend a few months there,” they add.
They’re also placing their faith in their realtor, describing him as an “absolute gun” before joking, “If he can’t sell it, it’s not us, it’s not the house, and it’s not him.”

Courtney and Sev admitted that watching last year’s auction results was difficult, particularly after Han and Can’s and Emma and Ben’s homes failed to sell.
Reflecting on the 2025 auctions, the gals said it was “awful” to watch the houses fail to sell.
“However, our dream has always been to just be on The Block, renovate a house together, see how we work together and do something that is once in a lifetime,” Courtney shared.
“That was always our priority and our main focus.”
Sev says they had applied to be on The Block “every year”, meaning they were simply thrilled to finally make it onto the show rather than being deterred by the previous year’s auction results.
“There are so many competitions within the competition, and we looked at the three months [filming] as one big competition, and then the auction is another standalone competition,” Sev adds.
However, Sev admits that watching the 2025 auction results was still “heart-wrenching”, adding, “I hope that’s not our life story.”
