MKR’s Krysten and Lucy debunk the biggest reality TV myth
Speaking exclusively to Chattr, the mother-daughter duo explained that being thrust into the wild, wacky world of reality TV was quite a “confronting” experience.
“It was so shocking to start with, especially when Alicia and Deanne walked out. We hadn’t met Alicia and Deanne at that point, and they are such a force of nature. Sitting at the table with them was really quite confronting,” Krysten said.
“Yeah, and like watching the walkout happen in real time, I actually couldn’t believe that that kind of stuff actually happened,” Lucy added. “It’s fully out of their own will, not scripted, walk-outs actually happen. I was in awe. It’s very for real!”

Krysten went on to address the rumours that My Kitchen Rules contestants play a “character” to suit a certain storyline.
“There are so many comments online saying, ‘Oh, it’s scripted, you guys are just playing characters’ and honestly, no one is scripted, no one is playing a character, everyone is behaving exactly as themselves,” Krysten said, with Lucy adding: “What you see is what you get!”
Krysten and Lucy reveal why watching the episodes back was ‘shocking’
Reflecting on their MKR experience, the contestants said “overall it’s been really positive” but found one aspect “shocking” in particular: watching the episodes back and seeing what the other teams had said about them.
“It’s kind of shocking because you don’t get to hear what everyone said [while filming the show],” Lucy shared, with Krysten adding: “Yeah, we haven’t seen like the food critiques when we weren’t at the table or some of the reviews with people giving their scoring. It’s been really interesting.”

Lucy went on to say that in particular, watching their first Instant Restaurant back “stung” due to the criticism they received.
“I think we kind of heard with our first Instant Restaurant that not many people loved the food, so watching it back and seeing the comments definitely stung a little bit,” she said.
“Some of the scores people have given have been a little unexpected,” Krysten shared.
Elsewhere in the interview, the ladies revealed there’s been a lot of drama in the contestant group chat since the episodes have aired, as some contestants aren’t happy with what’s been said about them.
My Kitchen Rules airs on Channel 7 and 7Plus.
