  • Sheridan admitted she was initially disappointed to enter the competition as gatecrashers, with no gatecrasher team ever having won MKR.
  • Despite the odds, the mother-son duo remain confident they can make it to the end, insisting their different cooking styles make them a strong team.

My Kitchen Rules (MKR) mother-and-son duo Sheridan and Ted are bringing plenty of banter, bickering and love to the competition, with their very different cooking styles already making for an entertaining team dynamic.

While Sheridan prefers organisation and traditional cooking, Ted loves experimenting with flavours and trying new techniques.

But despite their occasional kitchen clashes, the pair insist their differences are what make them such a strong team.

After cooking for the teams earlier this week, the duo have revealed they felt disadvantaged by a particular element of the show and they’ve called it out in a new interview.

Sheridan and Ted feel they had a MKR disadvantage

Ted and Sheridan were the first gatecrashers to enter the My Kitchen Rules kitchen, but their introduction to the competition came with a few challenges.

During their Instant Restaurant, fellow gatecrasher Zoe revealed she was pescatarian, meaning she couldn’t eat several of their dishes. The news came after they’d already served their entrée, unlike the other teams, who knew about her dietary requirements beforehand.

Speaking to New Idea, Ted admitted he felt the timing was unfair.

“I do feel like in that moment it was a little bit unfair,” Ted tells New Idea.

“We would have liked to have known. But by the main course, we knew, so it was really early on, but yeah, everyone else had the benefit of going into their course knowing that there was a pescatarian at the table, and they could do what they wanted with that.”

The pair stressed their issue wasn’t with Zoe’s dietary requirements, but simply wanting to make sure she had something to eat.

However, that hasn’t been their only hurdle. No gatecrasher team has ever won MKR, and Sheridan admitted she was initially disappointed they weren’t original contestants.

“I definitely felt like it was a disadvantage when we were, when we realised we were gatecrashers,” Sheridan said.

“I’m not going to lie, there was definitely a moment of disappointment.

“We knew that other people would avoid relationships, and we just felt like the gatecrasher position was going to be trickier.”

A Western Australian team has also never won the competition, but Ted and Sheridan remain confident they can defy the odds.

“Coming into the competition and having all those people having already set up their relationships and already formed opinions of how they were going to treat us, I think that was quite disheartening at first,” Ted says.

“But, me and mum were so confident in what we could do, so we never really let it get to us.”

Who are MKR’s Sheridan and Ted?

Sheridan is a high school mathematics teacher who describes herself as practical, direct and no-nonsense. Outside the classroom, she enjoys tending to her succulents and keeping socialising to a minimum.

In the kitchen, she’s all about organisation, reliability and getting the technical details right, with her signature dish being a yuzu dessert she spent considerable time perfecting after discovering it on Instagram.

Her son Ted is the youngest of four children and the only boy, and has certainly made a name for himself in the family kitchen, winning their annual Christmas cooking competition two years in a row.

A fan of golf, cars and all things competitive, Ted loves experimenting with recipes and techniques he’s discovered online. His favourite dishes to cook include butter chicken and Taiwanese beef noodle soup, with a particular passion for slow-cooked Asian cuisine.

While Sheridan favours straightforward, hearty dishes and Ted enjoys putting his own spin on recipes, the pair say their contrasting approaches are part of their strength. Asked to describe their dynamic in three words, Ted summed it up as: “Chaos, but a strong relationship and a lot of love.”

The Block airs Sunday – Thursday on Channel 9 and 9Now.
