After winning MasterChef Australia’s Pie and Ice Cream challenge, Pat McGarry and Hannah Johnson’s dishes will be available for sale at Coles nationwide from Monday, but will everyday Aussies get to buy exact replicas of their creations?
Almost. According to the MasterChef challenge winners, they had to tweak their cheeseburger pie and Salted Caramel Ice Cream with a golden bickie crumb ever so slightly so that they’d be able to be mass-produced and have the longevity to be stocked in Coles stores, and both said they really enjoyed the process of doing so.
“We were definitely part of the process of that, of tasting and adjusting and doing all that,” Hannah told Chattr.
“In terms of changing ingredients. They’re producing bulk mass to Coles, so they have to do that that way. But I actually got in and actually taste test different versions. So, it was like, this is fantastic, and yeah, it was pretty amazing.”
“I think the final product, yeah, as soon as you bite into it, you’re like, this is a cheeseburger.”
Pat explained that he went back and forth with the production team a lot to get the final product as close as possible to the Salted Caramel Ice Cream with a golden bickie crumb that he served up during the MasterChef episode.
“We had a really cool experience to be able to go and do the product testing with Coles, so being made on such a large scale, obviously we had to go back and forth with different flavours, but we got it really close to what I made, and it’s pretty true to what I made in the MasterChef Kitchen,” he said.
Pat added that he tasted “a lot” of different variations of ice cream during that process, and said it certainly wasn’t something he was complaining about.
“There were different versions where they added a bit more salt here and a bit more caramel here, and so it’s like kind of eating it, and then giving feedback. I’m never going to complain about eating ice cream, there was definitely a lot consumed on that day,” he laughed.
Hannah and Pat reveal why their so excited to see their MasterChef products in Coles
As of Monday, June 8, Pat’s Salted Caramel Ice Cream with a golden bickie crumb and Hannah’s Cheeseburger Pie will be stocked on the shelves of Coles for a limited time.
Hannah told Chattr that she can’t wait to bring her kids to Coles on Monday and show them the product in person.
“We are going to schedule in a Coles visit Monday morning, and we’re gonna get a bit of a stack of pies, and that will save me from cooking dinner that night,” she laughed.
“I can’t wait for the kids to walk in and see the cheeseburger pie. I think that they’re just gonna flip out, like I feel like they’re actually not going to understand it until they physically see my face on a package, and I’m very excited for that. So that’s so cool,” Hannah added.
Pat told Chattr that he lives in a sleepy town on the NSW Mid North Coast, and laughed about the prospect of people recognising him from the label on the jar.
“I’m super excited, it’s so surreal. I live in a really tiny town on the coast, and we only have one supermarket that happens to be Coles. It’s gonna be a bit awkward seeing your own face on there, and people will do a double take and be like, ‘Wait a bit, wait a minute, is that the ice cream dude?’” He laughed.
Pat added that like Hannah, he can’t wait for his little one to see his product at the grocery store.
“My little two-year-old girl, she obviously loves ice cream, and she’ll be losing it to see me and my own ice cream on the shelf, so that’ll be really fun.”
MasterChef Australia airs Sunday – Wednesday on Channel 10 and 10Play.
