For those of you who saw Sam Stanton and Chris Robinson butt heads in tonight’s episode of Married At First Sight (MAFS), the moment when Sam tells Chris he’s planning to bring up their fight at the Dinner Party probably felt a bit out of the blue.
However, in an interview with Chattr this morning, Sam reveals that viewers are missing a key piece of the puzzle. “You’re definitely missing one big conversation that I had with him by the pool, which basically was us going over the letter that we received from another couple,” explains Sam.
“At that time, I took upon myself to say it would be really good, Chris, if when we come to each other with feedback that we met each other with openness and kindness. And he then said to that that yes, he agrees, and that I’ve been shutting him down and disregarding and being defensive towards him.”

Sam explains that when he asked Chris for examples of when he’d displayed that type of behaviour, Chris said he didn’t have any. Sam clarifies that that was the situation he was referring to, when he speaks of being “gaslit” by Chris.
The Adelaide groom adds he while he does refer to that moment during the car conversation, it was edited out. “I’m just sort of yapping, and then [the audio] comes back in, and I say “gaslighter”, and then the audio goes back out,” he says. “So it actually misses the whole context of why I use that word.”
Sam reveals why he ambushed Chris in the car
Sam says the reason he only told Chris about his plan just before the Dinner Party was that he basically wanted to avoid another argument.
“I don’t know if ‘scared’ is the right word, but I was in a way, because every time we talked, he was just shutting down the conversation. I wasn’t feeling heard,” he explains.
“In the real world, I think I would have just said to Chris, look, you’re not hearing me. I’m going to leave, and you give me a call if you have figured out what’s actually wrong here. Because the way you’re being defensive and not hearing me at all is not OK.”
Sam says, however, that in the context of being on MAFS, the only way forward was to raise the argument at the Dinner Party. “In my head, I wasn’t doing anything wrong.”
The 34-year-old adds that his main goal in bringing up the fight at the Dinner Party was to get feedback on the couple’s relationship from the experts.
Married at First Sight (MAFS) 2026 airs Sunday – Wednesday on Channel 9 and 9Now.
