Big Brother Australia Rules

Former Big Brother Australia housemates have lifted the lid on what really goes on behind the scenes, including all of the strange rules contestants are required to follow. Recently evicted Jane Marshall-Doherty has revealed the consent rules housemates are required to follow when getting intimate, and former Big Brother Australia 2021 runner-up Christina Podolyan said on TikTok that the contestants aren’t allowed to sing in the house.

It’s quite juicy, so let’s get into it!

Can Big Brother Australia housemates have sex in the house?

Yes, Christina says that contestants are allowed to get “intimate” with each other in the house; however, there’s a catch. “You have to ask Big Brother for permission before you get jiggy with it,” Christina says. “Let’s say you’re about to get it on, right. You’d literally have to get up, you have to go to the diary room… you have to say, ‘Big Brother, may I please have consent’… and then the other person has to come in and say, ‘Big Brother, may I please have your permission to get down and dirty with someone’, and then Big Brother says yes or no.”

Jane confirms that consent is key, even when you have to “cuddle or kiss”, like Holly Young and Colin Ridley do all the time. “There is a code of conduct, and I think it’s 150 pages,” she tells Chattr. “Say a couple go off, like Coco and Bruce… you have to give consent to cuddle up and maybe kiss.”

Do Big Brother contestants have to get their luggage approved?

Yes, Big Brother Australia housemates get their luggage checked before they go into the house. “The production team will come into your hotel room and they’ll look through all your stuff and some things they’ll confiscate, some things they’ll leave behind,” Christina spills.

“For example, we weren’t allowed a hairdryer for obvious reasons because it’s obviously loud and it will interfere with the microphones if somebody’s saying anything.”

According to Christina, producers also weigh your luggage, as you’re only allowed a maximum of 23 kg.

Are the Big Brother housemates allowed to use hygiene products?

Yes, Jane confirms production provides a range of items for the housemates to use while they’re in the house. “They had everything you could want [or] need, you know [like] feminine hygiene, they had all of that. They had beautiful body soaps and lotions and lip gloss,” she spills.

Are Big Brother Australia housemates allowed to know the time?

Christina claims there are no clocks inside the house, so housemates aren’t allowed to know what time it is. “We lost all track of time, what date it was, we didn’t know what time it was. Sometimes they’d be like, ‘Housemates, go to bed’, and we’re like, well it doesn’t seem that late,” she recalls.

Can you sing in the Big Brother Australia house?

Singing is banned in the Big Brother Australia house, which Christina says is due to copyright reasons. “Anytime we [would] get caught humming a song or like singing, you’d hear, ‘Christina, to the diary room’. Or you would hear, ‘Housemates, there is no commercial music to be sung’, so yeah, you’d get a lot of shit doing that,” she says.

We’ll keep updating this as we hear of more bizarre rules the Big Brother Australia contestants have to follow.

Big Brother Australia 2025 airs Monday to Friday at 7.30pm, and Sundays at 7pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.
