How to watch the controversial series The Idol in Australia

All that glitters isn't always gold...

What do you get when you throw Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, and Lily-Rose Depp on a set together? Well, it looks to us like the answer is a damn juicy new TV series.

The star-studded trio are all part of HBO’s upcoming series The Idol.

The show’s been touted as the ‘next Euphoria‘ and drummed up ridiculous amounts of attention on social media. And, it’s not just fans that are excited about the premiere.

Two episodes of the brand spanking new series were debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and upon wrap they were celebrated with a five-plus minute standing ovation. However, despite the excellent response at the prestigious event, The Idol has bombed on Rotten Tomatoes with an abysmal score of 27%, with the low rating likely linked to its explicit nature.

Reviewing the screening, Variety wrote that the first two episodes are populated with “revenge porn photos of bodily fluids on Depp’s face, masturbation with ice cubes, nightclub-owning scam artists and vile Hollywood sycophants”.

Lily-Rose Depp. Binge.

Rolling Stone’s review was even more scathing.

“The double-dose the festival screened felt nasty, brutish, much longer than it is, and way, way worse than you’d have anticipated,” writer David Fear said in his review.

Regardless of the criticism, the suggestion that The Idol draws parallels to the hit show Euphoria, paired with its excellent reception at Cannes, has us ready to tune in and make a decision for ourselves.

Who’s in the cast of The Idol?

Depp and Grammy Award winner Tesfaye stepped into the leading roles of Jocelyn and Tedros respectively. Tesfaye is also a creator of the show, along with Sam Levison and Reza Fahim.

Some of the other leading roles include Suzanna Son as Chloe, Aussie Troye Sivan as Xander, Moses Sumney as Izaak, Jane Adams as Nikki, and Jennie Kim as Dyanne.

Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. Binge.

What is The Idol about?

After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (played by Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. The series follows the question if her romantic awakening will take her to glorious new heights or to a very dark place.

When will The Idol be released?

For those of us in Australia, the first episode of The Idol will be released on June 5 (the same day as the US) with the following five episodes to drop every following Monday.

Where can I watch it?
