The Summit Recap Episode 5: One contestant loses a race and Alex ensures his own security

The price is paid for Jans' taunt.

It’s episode five of The Summit Australia and Jans’ taunt of The Mountain’s Keeper just 24 hours earlier, has come back to bite him.

“See you later sucker!” he yelled during last night’s episode.

The nine remaining contestants then made their way through the mud and were met by host Jai Courtney, who revealed that the jibe had made the Keeper unhappy.

“Now she’s on her way and she’s determined to hunt you down,” he said. “Your only safety is to make it to that treeline where you see the smoke rising.”

The Mountain Keeper’s revenge

Paying the price for Jans’ mischief, the Trekkers sprint 1km with their money on their backs. While they could help each other out, the last person to arrive would be eliminated, losing the team $71,000.

“Run!” Jai yelled.

The helicopter above them made it almost impossible to leg it thanks to strong winds and as they make their way to the finish line, Phillip lets Isaac finish first, bidding an emotional, yet triumphant farewell.

The fall-out from Phillip’s elimination

Isaac is furious at Jans and wants him out. Jans does everything possible to remove the target from his back and successfully manipulates things by bonding with Brooke over letters from home.

Josh knows he’s playing with fire but feels he needs to be close to everyone for safety, even if it means trading blows and in a hush-hush chat with Jans, they both decide that Brooke and Isaac should be next to be voted off.

Getting to Checkpoint 4.0

The group needs to hike 20 km to get to the next Checkpoint where they plan to snag some cash and leave someone behind.

Sam is pissed about falling half a day behind and he’s not shy about it on the hike. His whining gets the target off the rest and onto him.

Brooke has had enough of Sam’s selfish attitude and decides he’s next to go.

The Trekkers arrive at Checkpoint 4.0

Josh is only interested in the cash and the opportunity to steal more, ignoring the shelter and mouth-watering Mexican feast at Checkpoint 4.

While he revels in the money, the tally comes to a whopping $700K.

As the cash is stowed away, the looming presence of Jai appears in the distance, indicating that crunch time is just around the corner.

The Obstacle

Jai is back and reveals a new obstacle. There are two kayaks at the checkpoint, but they need two more to cross the lake.

They also need four hikers to paddle out to find the other kayaks, while the other half will stay on shore.

As they paddle out, Isaac and Brooke are on the shore feeling like sitting ducks, aware that Sam and Jans pose a threat to them.

Alex wants to protect certain people and eliminate those he deems threatening. Therefore, to prevent Sam and Jans from gaining power during an impending vote, Alex splits up the group of Josh, Indi, Sam, and Jans, just in case they discover a duffel bag. He wants Sam and Jans gone.

Indi spots two extra kayaks on the lake. When they get to the kayaks, Jans asks, “Are there any bags here?” Unfortunately, there aren’t any. So, the four of them reluctantly head back with Sam and Jans feeling frustrated along the way.

When the kayaks make their final turn, The Mountain’s Keeper arrives, tossing the duffle into the water.

Alex senses an opportunity and takes off, swimming towards the bag. Sam and Jans paddle like maniacs to beat Alex to the duffle.

Alex gets there first and they all return to shore.

Four people are up for Elimination

Alex comes in shivering and drenched, dropping the bag in front of everyone with an expression that could change the game.

Reading the note, Alex announces those who stayed on the land are safe from elimination but have to select someone to vote off.

Josh, Indy, Sam or Jans could be the unlucky ones.

The Summit continues at 7.30pm on 9 and 9Now.
