MAFS' Steven and Rachel

Married at First Sight’s (MAFS) Steven and Rachel‘s post-Final Vows was the most heartbreaking storyline to play out this season, and now the groom has shared an update on where they stand.

Aside from Filip and Stella, Rachel and Steven were the only couple that agreed to stay together at Final Vows, but they revealed at the Reunion Dinner Party that they’d split. During the Commitment Ceremony Reunion, the couple made it clear that the breakup was due to Steven not being able to prioritise a relationship with Rachel.

Chattr caught up with Steven on Sunday night (April 12) and the MAFS groom shared where the couple stand now — five months on from when the Commitment Ceremony Reunion was filmed.

“Currently, me and Rachel are broken up, unfortunately, but we are good friends. We’re cordial. Everything is good. We still talk almost every day, and we’re working with each other to get through this and get to the end, and watching it back has been an experience, very emotional,” he said.

He added that while he’s not completely closed off to trying things again with Rachel, she’s made it clear that they’re done for good.

“I do have ‘what ifs’ sometimes, but no, there’s not [a chance]. Rachel did say to me on Stan [MAFS: After the Dinner Party] that it’s all over. So that ship is most likely sailed. Sucks, I had my chance, though.”

Why did Steven and Rachel break up?

Steven has revealed that when he left MAFS and got back to his real life, he realised he didn’t have time for a relationship.

“We spoke every single day,” he told 9Now. “However, I did have a little bit of a mess with my business because I just left it stagnant for three months. Coming into the busy season, I sort of dove headfirst into it, going, ‘Alright, I’ve got to get my finances underway.”

He admitted that the problem became clear when he went to Melbourne to visit Rachel, and said he realised he “can’t give Rachel what she needs”.

“I can’t come down to Melbourne every month. I’m a time-poor guy and she wants contact quite a lot,” he said.
