With the season one finale of The Last of Us taking the world by storm, we all want to know two things: What is happening with season two, and what will we do without our weekly fix of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey)?
On January 27, after only a few episodes had aired, the series was officially renewed for a second season. No surprises there, as The Last of Us has been a massive success for HBO.
The show has now surpassed House of the Dragon for full-season viewers, and the finale averaged 8.2 million viewers across all platforms for HBO – making it an opening night high.
So when can we see more episodes of The Last Of Us, and what will happen to Ellie and Joel? Let’s find out.
When will season 2 of The Last of Us air?
While the second season has been confirmed, it will still be quite some time before season two hits our screens.
According to executive producer Craig Mazin via The Washington Post, filming the first season took around 200 days, followed by a “feature-film-like production schedule.”
In total, it took 18 months from shooting the first scene to the launch of season one on January 15, 2023.
If we follow a similar timeline for season two, we can expect to be binge-watching it in mid-2024 at the earliest.
Who will be cast in The Last of Us season 2?
If you didn’t already know, The Last Of Us is based on a video game, and it has a sequel!
Since both the first game and the add-on have now been featured in season one, we can assume that season two will start with some of the events of the second game, The Last of Us Part 2.
The Last of Us Part 2 game does feature both Joel and Ellie, so we can safely assume to see the return of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in those roles.
Now, there is a five-year-jump between seasons in the game, but Mazin has reassured us that that won’t mean any recasts.
“There’s a little bit of interesting flexibility. Wonderful things that makeup can do,” he told Variety.
“We don’t get too wrapped up in that stuff. As long as people are absorbed by the story, I think there’s some flexibility there.”
Is there a trailer for The Last of Us season 2?
Unfortunately, a trailer has yet to be released for The Last of Us season two. However, if we follow season one’s timeline, we can expect the drop of a full trailer approximately one month ahead of the second instalment’s premiere.
Will there be a season 3 of The Last of Us?
Before the season 2 confirmation news, Mazin told Collider that he and Neil Druckmann don’t see The Last of Us as a series that runs for seasons upon seasons.
But, he did reveal that the “remaining story [in The Last of Us Part 2) would take us more than a season to tell.”
