Apparently, a popular Australian reality TV show is being axed following its worst rating season ever

Kinda saw that one coming...

It’s been confirmed that Big Brother Australia won’t be returning to screens this year, and reports suggest that the reality TV show has been axed for good.

TV Blackbox originally reported that the show had been cancelled following its lowest rating season ever in 2023. However, they’ve since clarified that while the axing hasn’t been officially confirmed, it won’t be back on TV in 2023.

The news originally came from journalist Luke Dennehy during an appearance on Perth radio station 6PR about Big Brother Australia’s future.

A spokesperson for Channel 7 has since stated that the channel is “still considering [the show’s] future”.

The show’s future was shrouded in uncertainty after the finale aired in December 2023, and a spokesperson wouldn’t confirm the renewal of the series to Chattr.

Big Brother performed well for this year in under 40s and, in particular, on 7Plus – both live streaming and video on demand. We will make a decision on a new season in due course,” a Seven spokesperson said.

Big Brother Australia 2023 had record-low ratings

Big Brother Australia 2023 was the lowest rating ever for the franchise and attracted just 152,000 overnight viewers in the five capital cities for its 15th season.

Those stats compared to the show’s figures of 853,000 viewers with it relaunched in 2020 show a stark contrast.

Big Brother contestants complained about the show’s rejig

The 2023 season of Big Brother Australia saw a bunch of young and single contestants enter the BB house. Typically, the housemates are a fairly diverse group with varying ages and quirks.

During an interview with Chattr, contestant Anna Sophia said that she “100%” thinks that she would have gone further on the show had the casting choices been more like previous years.

“I’m not gonna lie – I 100% thought there would be a lot more different personalities than there were. Quirky and different diverse people.

Big Brother does a spin every year and it is different so I guess I’ve gone into this year’s one. But it wasn’t what I expected.”

Various other contestants shared their shock about the casting choices on Big Brother Australia 2023.
