Adam and Jolene walked out of The Block‘s Week Five Room Reveals triumphant, with the judges awarding them a whopping 27 out of 30 for their living, dining and alfresco.
Darren Palmer raved about the “luxury” and “scale” of the room, Shaynna Blaze complimented the fireplace and the mirror, while noting that it was the “best room” they’ve done, and Marty Fox said it ticked a lot of boxes.
However, established interior designer Chris Carroll of TLC Interiors didn’t agree with all of the judges’ feedback and was particularly unimpressed by one of Adam and Jolene’s design choices.
“The mirrored wall was a shocker. Please don’t ever do this in your own home. It felt a bit cheap. An artwork would have been far more successful on that wall,” Chris told Chattr in an exclusive interview.
He added that he believes Lisa and Rosco, who came second by just one point, had the better room and should have beaten the South Australian couple.
“Lisa and Rosco’s zones were by far the most successful. Not only did they meet the ‘quiet luxury’ brief (which the winning team did not), but they delivered unexpected design moments,” he told us.
“The curved stone on the floor in front of the fireplace was a genius move that set them apart from the others. Their alfresco zone was one of two that featured some built-in design moments; the barbecue was a much-needed addition. It’s shocking they didn’t win.”
Chris went on to say that he believes that Lisa and Rosco’s area was “a beautiful example of how colour can be used in a considered way to evoke luxury and calm. They were robbed.”

When it came to Chris’ least favourite room of the week, his pick once again didn’t line up with the judges’ choice.
While Shaynna called Tayla and Wyatt’s room ‘boring’ and the couple received a measly score of 19.5 out of 30 from the judges, Chris thought Tayla and Rick’s room was actually worse.
“Sadly, Rick and Tayla continue to be the team failing to deliver on the ‘quiet luxury’ brief,” he told Chattr. “Their living room had terrible spatial planning, furniture that felt too bright and bold, and a fireplace that really did look like a pizza oven.
“That poor little armchair not sitting on the rug was a major design crime that could have been easily avoided. They make a lot of these obvious design blunders.”
Chris added that their “alfresco zone was their saving grace” and acknowledged that “the bar area with the barbecue built in was epic and what every home owner would want.” However, he said their internal space was “dire” and let down the house.
Meanwhile, Chris said that while his take on Wyatt and Chantel’s space may be controversial, he thought their living room was “actually amazing”.
“It felt far better than the other four. The judges kept banging on about the view as if you need to see it at all times from every room, which just isn’t true. Their living room was undercooked in terms of not enough things being in it, but they are meeting the brief the best of all the teams so far.”
