A popular internet theory claims one MasterChef contestant is being edited out

This is actually good news for Jack.
Where is Jack on MasterChef Australia and is fan favourite getting less air time?

Early in this season of MasterChef Australia, Jack Hosking appeared to be one of the ones to beat. But lately, many fans have been wondering… umm, where is he?!

Jack has served up some showstopping dishes this season, including an especially delectable honey and thyme pannacotta with blood orange and Campari granita. However, in a popular post on the MasterChef subreddit, one fan is wondering why Jack is shown so little each episode compared to his cooking counterparts.

“Has anyone noticed how they have barely given ANY screen time to Jack this season, even though his dishes are actually good and technical? Really unfair to just focus on select people,” they said.

The post got a bunch of upvotes and most of the comments agreed with the sentiment that Jack was getting edited out of the final episodes. “I had the same thought. Barely seen in the show so far,” added another.

MasterChef fans on X have also clocked that Jack has barely been given a minute of screen time in recent weeks.

So, what gives? Is this a classic case of the reality TV trope of ‘contestant is about to be eliminated, so why show them at all?’ or is something else going on? Given Jack’s impressive cooking abilities, some fans believe he’s being set up to be the surprise winner.

“I feel like it’s a ‘winner/someone who goes really far into the competition’ edit,” wrote one theory. Another Redditor agreed with this theory. “In the year that Emilia [Jackson] won, she got hardly any airtime until very late in the competition,” they wrote.

This theory proved popular among the MasterChef fan community. “I think he’s getting a special edit because he becomes an underdog winner or something. He’ll appear more soon. I can sense it!”

That said, they weren’t all jumping on this bandwagon, as another stated that the show’s editors simply can’t fit everyone into every episode.

“Besides the fact that this happens every season, you understand these shows are pre-recorded in a batch, then produced/edited prior to launch? They have a narrative they run across the season,” they wrote.

“Who knows, maybe Jack is a top-three dark horse, he might get love in the back third of the series.”

Will Jack Hosking win MasterChef Australia?

Jack Hosking is shaping up as one of MasterChef Australia 2026’s quiet achievers. The South Australian cook has not dominated the edit yet, but he has impressed the judges with consistently strong dishes and a clear passion for food.

A huge fan of the show, Jack was already recreating MasterChef challenges at home as a child, including the famous snow egg when he was just 11.

His love of cooking comes from his Nan Shelly, who taught him in the kitchen and later inspired him through her cancer battle. Jack said, “I feel her energy whenever I step into the MasterChef kitchen,” and her reaction to his apron win was deeply emotional.

Jack also wants to encourage more young men to cook. Away from the kitchen, he is in a long-term relationship with Olivia, or Liv, and admitted filming was tough: “long distance has been incredibly hard”, as he described her as “my whole world”.

With links to former contestants, including Callum Hann, plus fan speculation calling him a ‘dark horse’, Jack is being tipped as a contestant who could go far.

MasterChef Australia airs Sunday 7pm and Monday and Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.
