Australian rock icon Angry Anderson has died aged 79, with his family and bandmates confirming the singer, actor and charity ambassador passed away surrounded by loved ones.
Anderson’s death was announced in a statement shared by his family and members of his band, Rose Tattoo, who paid tribute to the frontman’s decades-long career and impact on the Australian music scene.
“Angry was a devoted father, and much-loved bandmate, friend, and member of the wider music and entertainment community,” the statement said.
“His loss will be deeply felt by all those who knew and loved him both here in Australia and overseas.”
The news comes after Anderson suffered a cardiac arrest in August while touring Europe with Rose Tattoo as part of the band’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
The musician was hospitalised in Germany during the European leg of the tour, forcing the group to cancel a scheduled performance on August 9. The following day, Rose Tattoo confirmed the remainder of their European shows would not go ahead as Anderson recovered.
The band had been scheduled to return to Australia for another leg of the anniversary tour in September.
Born Gary Stephen Anderson, the musician became one of Australia’s most recognisable rock figures after rising to fame as the lead vocalist of Rose Tattoo.
The band achieved international success with their hard-edged rock sound, earning a loyal following both in Australia and overseas. Anderson was known for his distinctive voice, energetic performances and trademark look, becoming a major figure in the Australian pub rock movement.
Outside of Rose Tattoo, Anderson also found success as a solo artist, with his 1987 ballad Suddenly becoming one of his biggest hits. The song achieved chart success across Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Beyond music, Anderson expanded his career into acting, appearing in a number of television and film roles over the years. He was also widely recognised for his charity work and involvement as an advocate for young people.
Throughout his life, Anderson remained a prominent and sometimes polarising public figure. In later years, he attracted controversy for comments regarding Islam, which sparked public debate.
Despite the controversies surrounding parts of his career, Anderson leaves behind a significant legacy as one of Australia’s most enduring rock performers, with generations of fans remembering his contribution to music and entertainment.
