It turns out Hamish Blake and Brickman had a hand in the Lego Masters vs The World concept

"The idea just started there"

Hamish Blake and Ryan McNaught a.k.a Brickman may be host and judge on Lego Masters vs The World, but it turns out they had a hand in creating the concept as well!

Speaking to Chattr from the set of Lego Masters during filming back in December, executive producer David McDonald revealed that he, Hamish, Brickman and the Endemol Team were always chatting to “fill time” between takes.

“Back in series three, we were talking about getting teams from around the world, because the show kept expanding,” he said. “Ukraine did it, then Germany had a crack and then we did it, and then the show rolled out more and more and more. The idea just started there.”

According to David, there are “different disciplines in different countries and people are into different things.”

“For instance, Technic is more seen in Germany,” he said. “And the French are more avant-garde! There’s different things from different countries with how they focus their storytelling, and just the way they think.”

In addition to this, David says the “characters” are different — adding another dimension to the series.

“I think from a character perspective, it’s different backgrounds and different experiences. There’s something to play with, something to learn and something for Hamish to play with as well.”

Even though Lego Masters is in its sixth season, the Nine EP admitted that the contestants continue to surprise him.

“What’s amazing about it is that they’re freestyling it and they do it immediately,” he said of the builds. “There’s nothing behind the scenes where we tell them the challenge before they’re actually on camera. All that stuff is on camera when they’re told what the challenge is, and how long they’ve got to do it and start. It’s all legitimate.”

“The pressure of that is extraordinary.”

As for the show’s continued success and popularity, David believes it’s because “everyone’s got a passing familiarity with Lego”.

“Whether you built with it as a kid or whether you built it with your own kids. There’s just something about it, the familiarity of it, knowing what it can do.

He continued: “With Lego, it’s being creative and watching creative things happen.”
