While My Kitchen Rules (MKR) has served up plenty of kitchen drama this season, some fans have become distracted by something else entirely: which states the contestants are actually from.
A discussion on Reddit kicked off after one viewer questioned why this year’s cast doesn’t appear to represent as many Australian states as previous seasons.
“WTF MKR?” the fan titled their post.
“What happened to having teams from each state? This year there are two from SA. Is MKR on its last legs?”

The post quickly attracted comments from longtime viewers, with several pointing out that while the current season features two South Australian teams and no team from Tasmania or the Northern Territory, this isn’t actually a first for the cooking competition.
One fan replied that last year’s competition also featured multiple teams from the same states.
“Last year they had 2x QLD and 2x NSW in the starting teams. They didn’t have a WA team till gatecrashers.”
Another added: “I know there’s been a couple of seasons where some states had multiple teams. It’s not new for the show.”
MKR fans miss seeing every state represented
While many commenters agreed duplicate states aren’t unusual, others admitted they miss the days when every corner of Australia had someone to cheer for.
One viewer noted they hadn’t seen contestants from Tasmania or the Northern Territory in recent years.

“Yeah. I don’t think there was an NT team the last couple [of] years either. That part makes me more sad. I would love to see some NT representation,” they wrote.
The original poster agreed, replying: “Yeah, NT seem miss out a lot.”
MKR has changed its casting over the years
Although many fans remember My Kitchen Rules as a state-versus-state competition, the format has evolved significantly since the series first launched.
As the show’s format expanded, some seasons included multiple teams from the same state, while others skipped certain regions altogether.
Recent seasons have continued that trend, with casting based more on the personalities and cooking abilities of contestants than ensuring every Australian state is represented equally.
Still, judging by the online reaction, plenty of viewers would love to see the competition return to its original “state versus state” roots.
My Kitchen Rules airs on Channel 7 and 7Plus.
