My Kitchen Rules Golden Mary
  • Mary and Golden are best friends and nurses from Victoria who met while studying in the Philippines before moving to Australia together in 2004.
  • Their MKR Instant Restaurant, Aming Kusina, celebrated their Filipino heritage, but their mango float ice-cream sandwich divided the judges and contestants, leaving Mary feeling “hurt” by the low score.
  • Golden became emotional while serving traditional family recipes, explaining that being away from her children and wanting to make her family proud made the experience especially meaningful.
  • The pair are determined to showcase Filipino cuisine on a national stage, stay out of the dinner-table drama and eventually launch a food truck serving Filipino street food to hospital workers.

If there’s one thing Mary and Golden want My Kitchen Rules viewers to take away from their time in the competition, it’s that Filipino food deserves a much bigger seat at the Australian dinner table.

The Victorian best friends, who both work as nurses, have brought plenty of heart, personality and — naturally — Filipino flavour to the 2026 season.

The pair have been friends for more than two decades after first meeting while studying nursing in the Philippines. They eventually moved to Australia together in search of a better life and have remained inseparable ever since.

Now, they’re hoping to showcase the food and culture they grew up with while proving they can hold their own in the MKR kitchen.

Mary and Golden’s emotional MKR moment

Mary and Golden’s Instant Restaurant, named Aming Kusina — meaning “our kitchen” in Tagalog — was deeply personal for the pair.

For Golden in particular, cooking her family’s recipes brought back memories of growing up on a farm with her brothers.

The emotions became overwhelming when she presented their okoy fritters with pipino salad to judges Manu Feildel and Colin Fassnidge.

“It means a lot because I grew up [in a] farm, and this is what they do,” Golden said during the episode.

She later explained that being separated from her family had made the experience even more emotional.

“I think because we were away from our kids. That actually broke us… well, especially me,” she told TV Week.

Mary, meanwhile, managed to find the funny side of the tearful moment, revealing her husband had joked: “Good job, Golden, for crying.”

But behind the laughs was a genuine desire to make their families proud.

“I want them to see that the sacrifice, being apart for so long, was worth it,” Golden said.

The emotional moment clearly struck a chord with viewers, with fans praising the pair for representing Filipino culture on the show.

Their Instant Restaurant didn’t go exactly to plan

While Mary and Golden’s entrée was well received, their main and dessert proved more divisive.

Their Cebu lechon belly was overcooked, which was particularly painful for Mary after she had boldly described herself as one of the “queens of pork”.

“I think I shot myself in the foot there when I said that we are the queens of pork,” Mary admitted.

Golden had apparently tried to stop her from making the declaration.

“I was telling Mary not to say it, but you can’t tell her what not to say and what to say,” she said.

Mary later conceded that the title may have been a little premature.

“My regret is calling myself the queen of pork without proving myself first. That’s why it says self-proclaimed queen of pork, but you know what? It was our first cook and we are home cooks,” she said

“We are used to cooking for just our family, our friends, not like on a big scale. But next time, maybe I won’t let the pork stay in the oven for that long.”

Their mango float ice-cream sandwich also failed to win over all of the judges and contestants, with some struggling to understand the traditional Filipino dessert.

That clearly stung Mary.

Mary was ‘hurt’ by the reaction to their Filipino dessert

For Mary and Golden, the dessert wasn’t simply another dish on the MKR menu.

The pair wanted their Instant Restaurant to give Australia a taste of the food they had grown up eating, which made the criticism of the mango float particularly difficult.

“I’m still hurt,” Mary said of the low score.

But despite the reaction, she wasn’t about to abandon the food that means so much to her.

“We love our food and we love it because we grew up eating it, but we always have this thing at the back of our mind: Is it good enough for this competition? Is it good enough for Australia?” Mary said.

“But you know what? We love it and we’re happy to show it and share it with everyone, if they don’t like it, it would hurt, but we’re still proud of our cuisine.”

It’s a sentiment that sums up exactly why the pair signed up for MKR in the first place.

“This is our culture and we just want to showcase it and we are very proud Filipinos and I just hope Australia will love it,” Golden said.

Mary and Golden were already panicking before their Instant Restaurant

The pressure of MKR apparently started well before Mary and Golden were responsible for feeding the other contestants.

Speaking to 7NEWS, Mary admitted they were already a nervous wreck while sitting through Tiffany and Giancarlo’s Instant Restaurant.

“The night of Tiffany and Giancarlo’s Instant Restaurant, we were literally shaking in our seats, and we were so anxious, we were so scared, because it was our turn next,” Mary said.

“I don’t think there’s anything that can prepare you, but we had a plan. We always come with a plan.”

Golden revealed the nerves were so intense that eating was difficult.

“You might not see it, but we actually could not eat properly,” she said.

“We were so anxious getting ready for our restaurant, so we were there but our headspace was in our instant restaurant. We were already cooking in our head.”

They’re nurses who met while studying in the Philippines

Away from the MKR kitchen, Mary and Golden have spent years working in healthcare.

The pair met while studying nursing in the Philippines before moving to Australia together in 2004, according to their official MKR biography.

They’ve remained best friends ever since.

Mary is a wife and mum of two who balances her career with her love of cooking, while Golden is a single mum who is equally dedicated to nursing and raising her child.

Their personalities apparently complement each other perfectly, with Golden bringing a calmer energy to Mary’s more boisterous and spirited personality.

And there’s a pretty big dream sitting behind their MKR appearance, too.

The pair hope to one day launch a food truck that travels to hospitals, serving Filipino street food to healthcare workers during those inevitable late-night shifts.

Filipino food is at the heart of their MKR journey

For Mary, Filipino food isn’t just something she enjoys cooking — it’s part of who she is.

“Filipino food is at the heart of who I am. If I had to choose my last meal, it would be all Filipino food. I hope my girls grow up loving and appreciating it as much as I do,” she said on the show.

Golden grew up with Filipino food too, but her curiosity extends well beyond her own cuisine.

She revealed that she and her mum would eat at restaurants before she went home and tried to recreate the dishes herself.

“I still do that today, documenting flavours whenever I travel, asking chefs about the ingredients behind their dishes,” Golden said.

That experimental streak is reflected in her cooking style.

“I trust my taste buds when I cook, I’m not a fan of measuring ingredients,” she said.

Mary’s philosophy is even simpler: “I cook to my heart’s desire.”

Mary and Golden are staying out of the MKR drama

Considering the amount of tension that has already unfolded around the MKR dinner table, Mary and Golden appear to have made a conscious decision not to get too involved.

When asked about the drama, Golden kept things simple.

“We stay out of the drama and you know, keep our head in the game,” she said.

And given the chaos that has already erupted between some of the contestants, that might be a pretty sensible strategy.

The pair also spoke about how intense the filming schedule could be, with long hours spent together making the competition more challenging than they had anticipated.

But ultimately, they’re focused on the food — and making their families and culture proud.

Who are My Kitchen Rules’ Mary and Golden?

Mary and Golden are best friends from Victoria who met while studying nursing in the Philippines. The pair moved to Australia together in 2004 and have remained close ever since, building careers in nursing while raising their families.

Proud of their Filipino heritage, the duo joined My Kitchen Rules to share the food, traditions and flavours they grew up with — and hopefully convince more Australians to give Filipino cuisine the love they believe it deserves.

Outside the competition, Mary is a wife and mum of two, while Golden is a single mum. The pair are also hoping to eventually launch a food truck that travels to hospitals, serving Filipino street food to healthcare workers.

As Golden put it, their goal on MKR is simple: “I want Australians to experience Filipino cuisine in any form. Through our food, I hope they can see how hospitable, generous and caring Filipinos are.”

My Kitchen Rules airs on Channel 7 and 7Plus.
