MasterChef Australia contestant Lydia Kamperos already has a big fanbase, and it isn’t hard to see why. The 58-year-old homemaker and mother of two thrilled both audiences and her fellow contestants when she earned the very first white apron of the 2026 in the premiere episode by the kind of Octopus dish you’d expect to find only in the swankiest of Michelin-starred restaurants.
Linda netted the apron when the show’s judges were wowed by her execution of a difficult dish in the MasterChef kitchen: charred octopus with leek and potato alongside a yoghurt sauce with a twist of dill oil.
While Lydia was worried she’d undercooked the octopus, she received unanimous praise from the three MasterChef judges, cementing her place as a top contender in the 2026 season of MasterChef Australia.

For Lydia, food and family are intertwined
For Lydia, it’s obvious that food and family go hand in hand. Describing her childhood as not unlike the scenes from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Lydia says she learned to cook from her mother, aunties, and uncles, as well as recipes in the Australian Women’s Weekly.
The cook recalled that her family home was always packed with extended family coming in and out, with big lavish feasts being a recurring memory throughout her childhood.
For example, Lydia carries childhood memories of the lamb basting on the spit every Easter, as her parents would nab the future cook a piece of the meat for her to taste. For Lydia, then, food and family are as inseparable from each other as body and soul.
What do we know about Lydia’s family?
Lydia looks to have had a very long and successful marriage, having been married to her husband Sam for almost 40 years.
The couple have two adult children, who Lydia proudly says are her greatest life achievements. As her kids have now left the family home, Lydia finds herself an empty nester, with more time to commit herself to her passion for cooking.

“It’s just been such a dream to be here and I still can’t actually believe that I’m here,” Lydia said to the judges when presenting her game-changing seafood dish.
“Tell me, how much do you want this?” Judge Jean-Chrisophe Novelli teased before tasting Lydia’s first dish. “A lot, more than anything,” she responded. “It’s such a great time for me, and all my dreams are around food.”
Of course, the judges were taken aback by Lydia’s creation. “I am so jealous of your family, who get to eat this food every day of their lives,” gushed Poh Ling Yeow. “Lydia, I’m so glad we finally found you,” Sophia Levin continued. “I mean, this is unbelievable,” said Jean-Christophe Novelli, describing her sauce as “exquisite.”
As she gave the good news to a friend over the phone, Lydia said, “I’m going to go now, just so I can pee my pants a little bit.”
Relatable. Yep, we’re officially on board the Lydia from MasterChef fan club. The only way from here is up.
MasterChef Australia airs Sunday 7pm and Monday and Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.
