The Great Australian Bake Off  is back for a fifth season on Foxtel’s LifeStyle Channel.

Ahead of the highly-anticipated return, Foxtel commissioned research to answer the age old question: Do Australian’s prefer sweet or savoury baked treats?

The poll was tallied and found Australia is a nation of sweet toothed fiends with 57% preferring a sugary rush over savoury baked goodies at 43%.

The data found Queensland as the sweetest state with 63% voting in favour of sweet over savoury.

Among the dozens of delectable desserts, it was the humble cheesecake that took out the top spot for most preferred sweet baked treat over Aussie classics like lamingtons, ANZAC biscuits. The pavlova rounded out the list.

The Great Australian Bake Off judge Matt Moran said: “I’m not really surprised that Australia has voted sweet over savoury, I’ve always said that I’m sweet and Maggie [Beer] is savoury so it’s nice to have one up on her!

“A little surprising that cheesecake was number one but if that’s the case, everyone is going to love that we have Maggie’s very special technical cheesecake in the series which they’ll have to keep an eye out for!” the renowned chef added.

The upcoming new season of The Great Australian Bake Off will see twelve new bakers don their aprons and taking their place in the iconic Bake Off shed to create culinary masterpieces.

Over 10 weeks, the baking enthusiasts will take on 30 challenges to test their baking skills, creativity and prowess in the kitchen.

They will each be under the watchful eyes of judges Maggie and Matt, alongside hosts Claire Hooper and Mel Buttle.

The show is the local version of the long running BBC original The Great British Bake Off.
