Reddit Introduces Profile Pages and It’s So Not Their Style

Reddit is a community where you can post anything you want about anything you can think of and someone will reply to it. I remember having to do an assignment on houses that were built out of shipping containers and just trawling through the comments, amazed that there was a community of people dedicated to helping others build their cargo ship houses. On the other hand, it’s also the place where roasting originated from.

A key part of Reddit’s appeal is that it’s based on a sense of community. So when they announced that the website would be testing out individual profile pages on the website, people were less than pleased. A post on the subreddit for community moderators, /r/modnews mentioned that the feature is open to alpha testers. The post read:

“Testers will have a new profile page design, the ability to make posts directly to their profile (not just to communities), and logged-in redditors will be able to follow them… We’re making this change because content creators tell us they have a hard time finding the right place to post their content. We also want to support them in being able to grow their own followers.”
Doesn’t that remind you of a few other platforms that we use on a day to day basis?
It also reminds me of Instagram. Source.
Introducing a follower count on a website that is essentially about community has left some Reddit users pretty unhappy about the change. Some are saying that it’s basically like the other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. This is what the profile page will look like once it is rolled out to all Reddit users eventually.

Not pretty. There are rumours floating around that the profile page could be about brands associating their product with a high profile Reddit user, without having to put it into a subreddit and be subject to everyone commenting.

We’ll just have to wait and see. Fingers crossed it doesn’t drive users away from the site completely.
