Doom is Upon Us: Marvel's X-Men Apocalypse

Now that Captain America: Civil War has made its debut, it’s time for the gear up for the next upcoming Marvel film. It’s been two years since the critically acclaimed X-Men: Days of Future Past, and the newest installment to the X-Men franchise coming May 27th is looking younger, fresher, and better than ever. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender will reprise their roles as our dynamic duo, Professor X and Magneto, and their relationship seems to be treading on thin ice.

The final trailer released a couple of days ago showcased the enormity of the movie’s villain, Apocalypse (Oscar Issac). Known as the first and most powerful mutant, he was considered a god in ancient times, and now he’s awakened after thousands of years in hibernation and not pleased with how the humans have been living. He also sucks the powers out of mutants, which is terrifying.

Not only do we get a huge ass villain, he also has ‘four horsemen’ – the religious allusions are strong in this one. They are an explosive combo of Magneto, Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), and Angel (Ben Hardy). Also, Magneto’s backstory seems to be fleshed out more in this upcoming film, yet it’s becoming a recurring theme to have him as the final secondary antagonist.

To counter this powerful force, the trailer reveals our favourite X-Men characters in a more youthful light, being trained for combat by Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult). The team includes: Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Scott Summers/Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee). It’s all getting too real for our gifted youngsters.

I’m really hoping this movie will live up to its predecessors. We have the whole world going up in flames: Our Opera House gets destroyed, some classic American bridges defy gravity and people are terrified, like in every other Marvel movie. It’s going to be apocalyptic (excuse the pun).

Don’t forget to check out what we have to say about other Marvel trailers – Doctor Strange and Suicide Squad.
