It seems like Disney is committed to bringing us a live-action version of all our favourite animated films. First it was The Jungle Book. Then it was Cinderella, and now of course, Beauty and the Beast.
All of the films have their own take on the classic – but none so more than the upcoming Mulan remake. Director of the film, Niki Caro, let it slip to MovieFone that there are “no songs right now” in the film. This could be for various reasons – like the fact the iconic “Be Our Guest” musical number cost more than the entire budget of director Bill Condon’s last film.
Crazy, right?
However, Caro promises that the flick will have a lot more fight scenes!
“It’s a big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving,” she said.
Tough women kicking ass? We can’t wait to see it! Whilst we’ll definitely miss tunes like “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” and “A Girl Worth Fighting For”, it’ll be interesting to see how the creators will re-imagine the story.
Mulan is the story of a girl who disguised herself as a boy so she could take her elderly father’s place in the Chinese army, and bring honour to her family. Will the story address the relationship between Mulan and Shang when she was posing as a man? Will the cast be made up entirely of actors and actresses of Asian descent? Will the feminist message behind it all be made blatant?
Who knows, but these are all questions we desperately hope are answered soon!
