10 Years: We Spoke with Jewson from Thundamentals

Thundamentals are ready to celebrate ten years of success since the release of their self-titled debut album. To celebrate, the Blue Mountains trio have announced a colossal anniversary tour kicking off in March.

One of the Thundamentals members, Jeswon, spoke about coming into the tenth year for the band.

“The biggest kind of wave around that whole thing is people hitting us up and being like I remember when you played with three people in the crowd in Katoomba and now look at you guys. And moments like that are really beautiful.”

Dubbed ‘Decade Of The Thundakat’, the 24-date run and 32 shows will begin in Northern Territory before trailing through Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales. They will also be joined by Elefant Trans MC B as their supporting act.

The band has become one of Australia’s most exciting and powerful live acts. In the last year alone, Thundamentals have graced the stages of triple j’s One Night Stand, Groovin The Moo, Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival, as well as selling out their biggest ever headline tour. Adding to the hype, the band came in at 8th in the Triple J’s hottest 100 hits.

Jewson comments:

“I was with my brother and sister in-law and there two little kids on the countdown so we were kind of listening all together and the numbers came down and our song wasn’t played yet and just to see the kids get so excited was probably the best thing about it and when it came in at 8 they just ran around and danced and screaming and that was a really cool moment, kind of like Christmas.”

Thundamentals is not only a band, but a family. Jeswon spoke about the unique vibe and connection between the band members:

“I always felt like we had a special connection with the band and for some reason some people have not recognised that yet but I have felt that in my heart. We did have something special happen and I felt like that now that its kind of like we are nationally known it feels great. I just feel so lucky.”

Following their accolades and commercial success, it is Thundamentals’ ongoing efforts to spread love and inspire a positive change in their own community that has endeared them to their legions of fans. This includes quietly raising tens of thousands of dollars through their Got Love Initiative on behalf of the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown and the The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.

The hip hop staples are coming into their tenth year as strong as ever, earning ARIA and J Award nominations for this year’s Everyone We Know LP. We can’t wait to see what they accomplish next.
