Stan has released the full trailer for the highly anticipated political thriller series, Gaslit, starring Academy Award winners, Julie Roberts and Sean Penn.

The series is a modern take on Watergate, a major political scandal that took place in the United States in the 1950s, involving the administration of President Richard Nixon. The show focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal.

The story is centring Martha Mitchell, played by Roberts. Mitchell is a celebrity Arkansan socialite and wife to Nixon’s attorney general John Mitchell, who is played by Sean Penn.

Mitchell was the first one to sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in watergate, despite her affiliation to partying. Hopelessly in love with his famous and outspoken wife, John Mitchell is forced to choose between his best friend, the President, or his wife.

Gaslit also stars Dan Stevens as “John Dean,” Betty Gilpin as “Mo Dean,” Shea Whigham as “G. Gordon Liddy” and Darby Camp as “Marty Mitchell”.

All characters that add to the excitement and dysfunctionality of the story, from Nixon’s bumbling and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.

Gaslit was created based on the first season of the critically acclaimed podcast, Slow Burn created and executive produced by Robbie Pickering and directed by Matt Ross. It is a narrative podcast that details the Watergate story, and even features interviews with people who were directly involved.

Roberts executive produced Gaslit under her banner Red Om Films, along with co-executive producers Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill. Anonymous Content and Slate’s Gabriel Roth and Josh Levin also executive produced. Leon Neyfakh, who created the podcast, consulted on the project. Gaslit is produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Gaslit premieres 24 April, same day as the U.S. and only on Stan.
