Game of Thrones Could End Sooner Than We Thought

Winter is coming on April 24, and with it, the possibility of the last full-length season of Games of Thrones.

We all hate to see our favourite shows end, but it seems that Game of Thrones will be ending sooner than we anticipated. Traditionally, each season has comprised of 10 episodes and it seems Games of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have considered breaking the tradition for the final two seasons. The shortened schedule would include seven episodes for season 7, and six episodes for season 8.

“I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap,” Benioff told Variety. “That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.”

Following the interview with Variety, HBO released a statement in regards to the show’s end date, which was backed up by EW: “Any conversations about the end of Game of Thrones and the number of episodes of future seasons is purely speculative. As is customary, HBO will sit with Dan and David to discuss the details once a decision has been made to go forward with season 7.”

HBO’s president of programming Michael Lombardo has acknowledged Benioff and Weiss’ plan for the show. “That’s my understanding from them right now, those have been the conversations we’ve had,” he said to Variety. “Because where these narratives go, it feels like another two years to them.”

However, Lombardo has his wishes clear for the show to continue for as long as it can. “As a television executive, as a fan, do I wish they said another six years? I do.”

While this is only an outline for the show’s finale and no details have been finalised, 13 remaining episodes in the land of Westeros does not feel like enough. The production team seems to be moving also as the filming for season 7 is expected to begin this year. On that note, when asked about how long the show would run for in 2014, the showrunners told EW they were planning for seven. “Seven gods, seven kingdoms, seven seasons. It feels right to us.”

Now it looks like we will have eight seasons.

There’s also the whole matter of George R.R. Martin, the author of the book series A Song of Ice and Fire from which Game of Thrones is based upon. His plans to release the final two books in the series in time to end with the show isn’t promising, according to Vanity Fair. While Benioff and Weiss know how the show ends (as unfair as that is, it’s understandable), fans of the book series will be faced with content in season 6 they have not read.

If there’s another Red Wedding, the fandom will probably not cope.
