Even though it’s winter, it feels like the wet season right now in Sydney. And because of the lack of water activites around the cities streets, it’s hard to find something interesting and fun to do when it’s bucketing down. But hopefully this little guide will allow you to enjoy yourself despite the rainy weather without breaking the bank (or your umbrella).
Go to a local show
Gigs and concerts are always some of the best places to have a good time and chill out with some friends. From the CBD to the inner west, you can find wide range of bands and genres that can appeal to everyone. My favourite spot to go is the Bald Faced Stag at Leichhardt, which hosts a plethora of hardcore and metal shows. Hellions are playing there on the 18th of August but if you aren’t a music fan, you can still go and get some tasty food from revamped kitchen. One of their signature dishes is The Stag: double beef pattie, glazed double bacon, double cheese, secret sauce, charred onion, jalapenos, tomato and lettuce.
Get cultured
Art galleries and museums around Sydney are some of the best in Australia and they offer a wide variety of styles and genres of art. From the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is right on the harbour and has some of the most interesting, interactive and innovative works of art from Australia and around the world. The Australian Museum, across from Hyde Park, is hosting a David Attenborough virtual reality experience, and the Sydney Living Museums are giving away free admission during the rest of the month of July. If you are more of a fine art fan you can go visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales and peruse the Frida Kahlo exhibition and admire the beauty of paint instead of being washed away.
Get the definitive Joker story
The newest Batman animated movie is coming out this month and it is going to focus on the ‘definitive’ joker story. This story has influenced almost every director that has tackled the Clown Prince of crime and now we are finally going to be seeing it in film form. If you were thinking of bringing your children to this movie just be warned, it’s rated MA15+ and it’s doubtful that they’ll shy away from the hard hitting content.
If you want to go watch one of the greatest stories that Bats has been in, visit Dendy Newtown on the 24th of July.
And there is nothing wrong with getting a bit wet and enjoying the town the way it was meant to be, by getting lost and adventuring out, taking photos or watching people scurry around trying to find the closest cover to hide under. There is nothing that is stopping you from having some fun in Sydney, rain, hail or shine.
