Ah, awards show season has started again. This time, it was the Golden Globe awards that caught the world’s attention. Jimmy Fallon hosted the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards for 2017, and let me tell you, his opening number was definitely worth tuning in for.

He wasn’t the only person everyone was talking about after the awards ceremony closed. Meryl Streep also made headlines for calling out President-Elect Donald Trump’s behaviour when accepting her award.

“This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kinda gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” she said.

Trump wasn’t too happy with the remarks, however, tweeting:

Winner: Moonlight
Nominees: Hell or High Water, Lion, Hacksaw Ridge, Manchester By The Sea

There was high anticipation surrounding Hacksaw Ridge and Manchester By The Sea, but in the end the Golden Globe went to Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight.

BEST MOTION PICTURE — MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Winner: La La Land
Nominees: Deadpool, Florence Foster Jenkins, 20th Century Women, Sing Street 

BEST ANIMATED FILM

Winner: Zootopia
Nominees: Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, Sing, Kubo and the Two Strings

Despite the hype surrounding Moana and the acclaim of the traditional-style animation of sleeper-hit Kubo and the Two Strings, the Best Motion Picture for Animation went to Zootopia.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

Winner: Elle
Nominees: Divines, The Salesman, Toni Erdmann, Neruda.

Elle was quite a sleeper-hit in terms of critical reception, receiving only a 7.3/10 on IMDb and 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA

Winner: The Crown

Nominees: Westworld, Game Of Thrones, This Is Us, Stranger Things

God Save The Queen! Not even hit shows like Westworld, This Is Us, Stranger Things or the critically acclaimed Game of Thrones could stop the Queen Elizabeth II biopic The Crown from taking the top prize this year.

BEST TELEVISION LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

Winner: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Nominees: American Crime, The Night Manager, The Night Of, The Dresser

BEST TELEVISION SERIES — MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Winner: Atlanta
Nominees: Black-ish, Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, Veep

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE — DRAMA

Winner: Isabelle Huppert (Elle)
Nominees: Amy Adams (Arrival), Ruth Nega (Loving), Natalie Portman (Jackie), Jessica Chastain (Miss Sloane)

Quite a few critics and movie-goers were surprised that neither Natalie Portman’s performance as Jackie Kennedy or Amy Adams’ role in Arrival won the Globe this year, losing just barely to Isabelle Huppert’s work in Elle.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE — DRAMA

Winner: Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)
Nominee: Joel Edgerton (Loving), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic), Denzel Washington (Fences), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge)

Casey Affleck certainly stepped out of his brother’s shadow in this heart-stirring film about a brooding handyman left to look after his nephew following his brother’s tragic death.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE — MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Winner: Emma Stone (La La Land)
Nominees: Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins), Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen), Lily Collins (Rules don’t apply) , Annette Bening (20th Century Women)

BEST SCREENPLAY — MOTION PICTURE
