Ed Sheeran Has Quit Twitter

After his social media blackout last year, it appears music sensation Ed Sheeran has been having a hard time with his Twitter account.

The singer/songwriter announced that he’s quit the social media platform after being the target of abuse from online trolls.

In an interview with The Sun, Sheeran said;

“I’ve actually come off Twitter completely. I can’t read it. I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. Twitter’s a platform for that. One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it. The head-f*** for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.”

This isn’t his first break from the Internet. In 2015, after finishing his world tour for X (Multiply), he announced via Instagram he’d be taking a step back while working on what would eventually become ÷ (Divide).

Abuse on social media is a big problem for celebrities. Some embrace it, like on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! Celebrities Read Mean Tweets segment.

However, some are truly awful, copping tirades of abuse because of their gender, race, sexual orientation or talent. Ed isn’t the first celebrity to call it quits after abuse.

Lily Allen said, “My timeline is full of the most disgusting, sexist, misogynistic, racist shit.”

Leslie Jones, who starred in the all female Ghostbusters also was sent racial abuse.

The social media site is taking some steps to stop the abuse by introducing a safe search that filters out abusive tweets. However, trolls are always going to attempt to break through the cracks.

Whoever you are, whatever your standing in society, it is absolutely awful to log on to social media to see people attacking you for who you are.
