September can often be a mixed bag for movies. It is that time of year where we often find the hidden gems of the year, and also some of the biggest stinkers the year has to offer. These are some of the movies you should be looking out for this September.
IT – 7 September
IT. The movie that needs no introduction unless, of course, you live under a rock. The film is an adaption of the Stephen King novel of the same name and features everyone’s favourite clown, Pennywise. It (pun intended) is no surprise that IT will be the most anticipated movie this month for many people.
The film stars Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise and features a large younger cast including Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremey Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff and Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard.
PATTI CAKE$ – 14 September
Posing as one of the hidden gems of the year, PATTI CAKE$ has been seen as the female version of 8 Mile. The film follows the rise of a New Jersey rapper name Patricia Dombroswski, or PATTI CAKE$.
Geremy Jasper makes his feature film directing debut as well as writing the film. It features a close to no-name cast including Danielle MacDonald and Bridget Everett.
Mother! – 14 September
If horror films are your type of genre, then September is the month for you. With an all star cast, Mother! is a film that no matter how many times you see the trailer, it is still unclear as to what is going on. The film is directed by Darren Aronofsky, who directed films such as Black Swan, The Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream.
Mother! stars Oscar Award winners Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, Westworld‘s Ed Harris, Catwoman herself Michelle Pfeiffer, comedic actress Kristen Wiig and Irish brothers, Star Wars‘ Domhnall Gleeson and Logan Lucky‘s Brian Gleeson.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle – 21 September
Three years after the original, Kingsman returns to our big screens. The film brings back some of our favourites while introducing us to some new characters when the British Kingsman have to team up with their US counterparts, Statesman.
Returning to the sequel is Taron Egerton, Sophie Cookson, Colin Firth and Mark Strong. Kingsman: The Golden Circle also brings on big name Channing Tatum, Game of Thrones‘ Pedro Pascal and Oscar Award winners Halle Berry, Julianne Moore and Jeff Bridges.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie – 21 September
Following the successes of The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie comes The LEGO Ninjago Movie. This film follows a team of six young ninjas as they fight to defend their city from the greater evils, one of which is the father of lead Ninjago member, Lloyd.
Like previous LEGO films, The LEGO Ninjago Movie features a massive voice cast including: Olivia Munn, Justin Theroux, Jackie Chan, Dave Franco, Michael Pena, Kumail Nanjiani, Abbi Jacobson and Zach Woods.
Battle of the Sexes – 28 September
Rounding out the month for movies is one that is already getting a lot of Oscar buzz, Battle of the Sexes. The film follows the true story of a historical tennis match in 1973 when retired tennis champion Bobby Riggs faces off the current female number one, Billie Jean King. At the time, this event was massive for the world of women’s sports.
Battle of the Sexes stars recent Oscar Award winner Emma Stone and Oscar Award nominee Steve Carell as the leads. The film will also feature Back to the Future‘s Elisabeth Shue, Independence Day‘s Bill Pullman, Nocturnal Animals‘ Andrea Riseborough, The Good Wife‘s Alan Cumming, Rick and Morty‘s Chris Parnell and Bob’s Burgers‘ Sarah Silverman.
