La La Land has won Best Picture at the 89th Oscars… Wait, no… Moonlight has won Best Picture at the 89th Annual Academy Awards!

In a Steve Harvey style announcement, La La Land was crowned Best Picture before it was revealed that the wrong film had been announced Moonlight was the true winner of the Best Picture category. In a classy act, La La Land producer, Jordan Horowitz clarified the error and presented what had been his Oscar to Moonlight director, Barry Jenkins.

Along with their Best Picture win, Moonlight also scored Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor with Mahershala Ali.

Despite losing out to Moonlight for Best Picture, La La Land won the most awards of the night with six total Oscars, matching the efforts of last year’s powerhouse film, Mad Max: Fury Road. Emma Stone collected Best Leading Actress. Linus Sandgren won in the Best Cinematography category. David Wasco and Sandy Reynolds-Wasco shared Best Production Design and Justin Hurwitz took home two Oscars with Best Original Score and Best Original Song for ‘City of Stars’. Damien Chapelle also became the youngest ever director to win Best Director.

Both Hacksaw Ridge and Manchester by the Sea won two Oscars at the biggest night in Hollywood. Hacksaw Ridge won Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing, while Manchester By the Sea‘s Casey Affleck won Best Lead Actor and writer/director Kenneth Lonergan won Best Original Screenplay.

Disney Studios had an extremely strong showing throughout the Oscars. Short animated film, Piper, which played before Disney’s Finding Dory, won Best Short Animated film. Zootopia took out Best Animated Feature, while The Jungle Book beat out two other Disney properties, Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, to claim Best Visual Effects.

In perhaps the second biggest twist of the night, critically panned Suicide Squad from Warner Bros. and DC is now an Academy Award winner after taking out the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

With the Academy Awards over for another year, and so many amazing films already having been released this year, we can already see that the 90th Annual Academy Awards are going to have their work cut out for them choosing nominees.
