You read that correctly. Netflix, also known as the gods of streaming content, are shining the light on Queensland in a new Aussie series. The show named Tidelands has a focus on supernatural crime as an ex-criminal returns to her hometown. She’s heard some rumours about the new inhabitants and when a body washes up, her curiosity grows. Naturally, the new inhabitants are half-human, half-siren who call themselves “Tidelanders”.

Netflix is clearly stoked about this release, revealing the announcement in a tweet.

“We’re proud these strong Australian storytellers are bringing their vision to the first Australian Netflix original series,” said Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series at Netflix in a press release. “We can’t wait to bring the mystery of Tidelands to our members around the world.”

Co-creator and co-executive producer Tracey Robertson, who is also the producer of hit show Secrets and Lies, is super stoked about this.

“This story is one that has been itching to be told and we are thrilled to be making it on our home soil in Australia with fantastic creatives and highly skilled crews.

“The primeval landscapes of Queensland are a perfect setting to tell the story of betrayal, small town secrets, ancient mythology and, when it comes to family, explore whether blood really is thicker than water.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m keen to see Tidelanders tear apart a small Aussie town. There’s something so interesting about small town drama and when you add deadly mythological creatures into the mix, you know you’re in for a good time.

Unfortunately the show will not be gracing our Netflix queues just yet. Production for Tidelands is looking to start in 2018, so we’ve got a while to wait.

However, what might tide you over is that there’s going to be 10 episodes that will go for 50 minutes each. That’s a whole lot of content! Let’s started the countdown to 2018.
