Honestly, how can you have The Mummy without Brendan Fraser? That cheeky little American sweeping Rachel Weizz off her feet and wise cracking a mummy who is thousands of years older was a national treasure.

Obviously some treasures can’t be left alone. This reboot will be featuring Tom Cruise. I’m sorry, what? Is this blasphemy? It’s 2016 – I didn’t think this movie needed a reboot but clearly Hollywood had other opinions as Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan have been working on producing the Universal Monsters film series that will reboot classic monsters like the Mummy, the Invisible Man, and Van Helsing.

“You have to make great individual movies, first and foremost,” Kurtzman said. “You have to deliver them. And if you do that, then the audience will follow you.”

These monsters will be within a shared universe much like Marvel has done with the Avengers, but slightly different as each film . This is evident in the trailer as we already have Russel Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, which will undoubtedly lead to film crossovers in the future. The tagline of the film “Welcome to a new world of gods and monsters” is a clear indicator as to the direction of these reboots in regards to the universe and tone of film, which is quite clearly horror.

So it looks like we have a new Rick O’Connell (or rather Nick Morton as he’s called, but not until 2017).

The full trailer for the upcoming film has dropped and for sure, it looks absolutely terrifying. While beetles crawling under your skin was the stuff of nightmares, this film has taken it up a notch. Gone is the slapstick humour and the comic relief of John Hannah, Weizz and Fraser, the trio we grew to love. It’s been replaced it with ‘Mission Impossible: Curse of the Mummy’.

The opening sequence is set in a military helicopter as they fly back with a dreadful and mysterious sarcophagus. Just as it looks like its smooth sailing home, they’re attacked by a massive swarm of locusts and it all goes to hell from there. While it seems the plagues from the OG film will still be featured, it’s a shame it won’t be a completely accurate reboot as it’s not even set in Egypt, but in modern London. Oh, and the Mummy is a chick who looks like she has more supernatural powers than Imhotep ever had and her face is completely intact. I’m not sure how I feel about this.
