Eighteen years ago, four women appeared on our television screens and revolutionised the way we think about love, sex, relationships and ourselves.

Of course I am talking about Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbs and Samantha Jones – the ladies of Sex and the City. Over the years we have laughed, cried and became friends with these four New Yorkers, eagerly watching as they made their way through the labyrinth that is life.

Though what did Sex and the City teach us? What did we take away from one of HBO’s biggest hit series? What were the life lessons that these colourful woman instilled into our lives?

  1. Heartbreak is sometimes inevitable.

Sometimes it is best to walk away when you can. Nobody likes to break-up but perhaps you do more harm holding onto the actual damage, rather than simply letting go.

  2. It’s OK to put yourself first.

Being selfish isn’t a sin. By taking care of yourself, first and foremost, you are able to truly invest in your other relationships. You are able to explore the most important and sometimes significantly challenging relationship, one that you have been invested in your entire lifetime: yourself. And when it finally comes time for someone to fall in love with the you that you love, well, in the words of Carrie herself, that’s just fabulous.

  3. Don’t break up with someone via a post-it note.

Seriously, it is as simple as that. If you do, you’re kind of an arse.

  4. Sex is not a dirty word.

There is nothing wrong with being sexually liberated. If anything, it is healthy to talk about sex with those people who you trust and care about. If you want to wait until marriage, brilliant! If you want to have some casual fun with that bartender who has been looking at you all night, you do that! The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and you want to.

  5. Don’t be afraid to voice your needs.

At the heart of a relationship is communication. You need to be vocal about who you are and what you want. If not, your cloud number nine could soon be running the line.

  6. Soul mates come in many different types of people.

Everyone wants to meet the love of his or her life. That one person who you can wake up next to each morning, with hazy eyes and whisper,‘I love you’. Though this is just one type of love, and in this lifetime I will be damned if I believe that we only get one love. We are able to find great loves in our friends too. Invest your love with those who love you in return.

With all that said, audiences around the world give thanks to Sex and the City and the women wearing Manolos, who walked straight into our homes to teach us the importance of love and life.
