In 2001 a woman known to the court as Lyndal filed a civil case against Toowoomba Preparatory School and the Anglican Archdiocese. When she was under their care as an 11-year-old, she was sexually abused by her boarding house master.

In 2017, her story – as told by her lawyer Stephen Roche – is being turned into a film. Based on Roche’s book of the same name, Don’t Tell is said to be the Australian version of Spotlight, the story of the Boston Globe newspaper that exposed the sex abuse within the Boston Catholic community.

Why?

Well, some consider it the catalyst case for what would eventually be known as the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Jodie Willey, Shine Lawyers’ national legal partner and lead lawyer on the case, stated that the case led to policy changes and helped survivors feel safer in opening up about what happened to them.

The film not only highlights how horrific these abuses are, but just how much strength it takes to stand up and speak out against them.

The film stars Sara West as Lyndal, Aden Young as Stephen Roche and Gyton Grantley will play Kevin Young, the boarding house master who committed sex abuse crimes against 20 girls.

The film debuts in Australian cinemas on May 18. You can watch the trailer for Don’t Tell below:
