Coming off a slow yet massive month for movies in April, May hits back harder than a Saturday night on your wallet. We are in for some blockbusters featuring plenty of Aussie talent.

Get Out – May 5th

The directorial debut of Jordan Peele and early contender for Rotten Tomato’s 2017 Golden Tomato Best Film Award with a critic rating of 99%, Get Out is a horror/mystery film about a young black man who is visiting the estate of his white girlfriend’s parents. This film has been described as a critique on society while being “a brilliantly effective and entertaining horror/comedy thrill ride”.

Get Out stars English actor Daniel Kaluuya, most commonly know for his role in Black Mirror, and Allison Williams from HBO’s Girls.

I Am Heath Ledger – May 11th (Limited Release)

This one is going to be hard to see because there are very few cinemas that will be showing the film, but it is still worth mentioning. I Am Heath Ledger is a documentary on the life of the Aussie actor. From his iconic role as The Joker to his breakout role in Brokeback Mountain, Ledger will go down as one of Australia’s best ever actors. The documentary will celebrate his life with many family members and friends such as Naomi Watts, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Ang Lee and Ben Harper.

It is hitting some Australian cinemas on May 11th. However it is having a world television premiere on the 17th of May on Spike TV.

Alien: Covenant – May 11th

Ridley Scott returns to the franchise that put him on the map. While 2012’s Prometheus was later confirmed to be apart of the Alien universe, this will be the first time since the original that Scott will helm the Alien name.

The sci-fy/thriller features Michael Fassbender reprising his role from Prometheus, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’s Katherine Waterston, Spotlight’s Billy Crudup and all round funny guy Danny McBride.

John Wick: Chapter 2 – 18th May

Keanu Reeves returns as ex-hitman John Wick. After taking out the people who took everything from him (mainly his dog), Wick discovers that a bounty has been put on his head.

After the first installment came as a massive surprise to movie goers, John Wick 2 has hit them harder, scoring a higher rating than the first on both IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. The film features a largely new cast including Riccardo Scamarcio, Ian McShane, Common and Aussie Ruby Rose.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – 18th May

The classic story of Arthur and the sword, this modern telling is helmed by newly announce Aladdin director, Guy Ritchie.

King Arthur has a well know cast including Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam as Arthur, newly casted young Dumbledore Jude Law, Jurassic World and Supergirl actress Katie McGrath and Aussie star Eric Bana.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tale – 25th May

Who would of thought this franchise would of got to it’s fifth film? The story of what the fifth installment will be about is still fairly thin however seeing our favourite pirate on screen once again is always going to be entertaining.

Johnny Depp returns as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow, with Keira Knightly, Geoffry Rush and Orlando Bloom returning to their previous roles. The cast also features Kaya Scodelario and Iron Fist and Australian actor David Wenham.
