It has taken a combined total of 33 seasons of The Bachelor U.Sand The Bachelorette U.S. for the star of the show to be African-American, the only other non-white person being American-born Venezuelan Juan Pablo Galavis. Yet, on Monday night, it was confirmed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that it was finally happening.

Rachel Lindsay is a contestant on the current season of The Bachelor, which is still running. However, the show was just so excited that they broke the news weeks before they usually do.

Kimmel joked that Rachel’s home town visit with Nick didn’t go well and that this big reveal was a bit of a spoiler.

“Yes, it is,” Rachel agreed. “But, we are a couple weeks out from filming, ready to get this started. I’m ready to find love, find a husband. If you know anybody out there who needs to apply, sign up!”

On Good Morning America, Rachel was asked if she felt added pressure because of her glass-ceiling breaking season of The Bachelorette.

“I don’t feel added pressure. I’m honored to have this opportunity and to represent myself as an African-American woman. I hope that people rally behind me, like they did in Nick’s season,” she explained.

Shows like The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are super important, as they get an insane amount of viewership every episode. By breaking the ‘norm’ and finally showing that there are people and couples from a variety of backgrounds, in a time in America when being different could be troublesome, it’s reassuring to see TV executives finally taking a stand. Representation in television has been some viewers have craved for a long time. It’s amazing to finally see that happening.
