“I’m going to be the heroine in my own story,” Anne Cuthbert declares in the new Netflix adaptation of Anne of Green Gables.

And, indeed she is. In this grittier, more realistic version of LM Montgomery’s beloved eight book series Anne is a hero.

Sent to Green Gables in place of the boy Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert had asked for, the start of Anne’s time on Prince Edward Island isn’t easy.

But her quick wit and vibrant personality quickly gain her the admiration she has been deprived of in her life as an orphan.

Amybeth McNulty shines as the quirky, talkative and imaginative Anne in the reimagining of the classic tale.

It is an adaptation which is sure to resound with a modern day audiences.

Dealing indiscriminately with the treatment of orphans at the turn of the century and, with the treatment of women the remake shows a darker side to the lighthearted tale women from all over the world have fallen in love with.

Even in this new version it is easy to see why the narrative has so long been admired. Anne is a character with spunk and is an excellent role model for young girls.

It is hard not to fall in love with her as she proclaims proudly in the first episode,  “girls can do anything a boy can do and more.”

Although the amount of dribble that comes out of Anne’s mouth is sometimes a little annoying, there are many moments throughout the season which make Anne an easy character to relate to.

There are several scenes which are sure to have audiences snorting with laughter as they reminisce the awkwardness of puberty and of first love.

However, the show also deals with darker topics such as abuse, bullying and loss.

It is a realistic take on the classic Anne of Green Gables tale which is sure to captivate a whole new audience.
