Grinspoon are taking us on a trip down memory lane with a massive national Chemical Hearts tour. The tour will be a re-release of tracks for the ‘Chemical Hearts’ vinyl EP, which the band promises will awash fans with nostalgia.

I remember seeing Grinspoon at the first musical festival I ever went to: Big Day Out, 2012. I was 15 and in the middle of a Daria-infused “I hate everyone and love alternative music” phase. Little did I realise that Grinspoon were one of Australia’s biggest musical success stories, with a very long and decorated career to show for it. I like to think I’m better at researching artists now than I was in Year 10.

Despite kicking pretty much every musical goal an Australian artist can, it’s clear Grinspoon have unfinished musical business. More than 20 years since being Unearthed by triple j (the first competition of its kind!) the guys have been back on the road, writing, recording and discovering new artists to join the ride.

I got to chat with bassist Joe Hansen, who said it’s unlikely they’ll be slowing down any time soon.

“I guess touring is just really part of our DNA. It’s something we love doing – and the last tour went really well so we just thought, ‘Why not?!’”

Fans obviously rejoiced with the tour announcement, with new shows being added to accommodate the sold-out Brisbane, Melbourne and Wollongong shows.

Joe says:

“So far it’s been a really good reaction. Everyone seems really excited and we’re looking forward to a great tour.”

Supporting Grinspoon are Adelaide punk-duo The Hard Aches, Melbourne rockers The Gooch Palms and Brisbane trio Bugs, which Joe is really pumped about.

“All the bands on the bill are really awesome – so we can’t wait to present a really great show overall. We mostly just love getting out there and playing for our fans and having some rad singalongs!”

With a career spanning more than two decades, Joe says it’s always the response from fans that keeps them going.

“Every new tour and gig is fun and exciting. There’s always something new to achieve, and new songs to write. It’s such a privilege to go out and play to a bunch of people that are keen to hear us. There’s nothing better than having a full crowd going off to our music, it’s pretty cool!”

With the constant need to keep writing and playing fuelling their creativity, Joe says that some new music from Grinspoon is on the cards.

“Pat and Kris have been laying down some new tracks which we’re super excited for everyone to hear. After this tour, the plan is to have some quiet time to work on some new music – so stay tuned for a new release. We’re all so pumped for some new tunes.”

You can catch Grinspoon at Waves in Towradgi on October 19, with some tickets still available via their website.

The ‘Chemical Hearts’ vinyl EP will drop at the beginning of the tour on October 11.
