2 Aussie Blokes Pranked North Korea And Got Away With It

Aussie blokes are becoming pretty well known for their wildly hilarious, but often stupid antics, especially surrounding sport. We’ve had race car drivers doing “Shoeys” on the podium, and a group of mates being arrested in Malaysia for stripping down to Malaysian flag budgie smugglers at the Formula 1 Grand Prix. But these next dudes have stepped it up.

Morgan Ruig and Evan Shay, both 28, convinced North Korean officials that they were from the Australian Golf Team, and went on to compete in the 2016 North Korean Amateur Golf Championships. Because of course they did.

In case you weren’t aware, North Korea is one of the most isolated, authoritarian countries in the world. It’s so strict that taking photos of the wrong thing can leave you locked up in detention.

The hilarity of the boy’s situation heightened when it became obvious that Ruig and Shay are pretty horrible golfers. This was honestly just two Aussie blokes having a laugh inside the world’s craziest communist country.

Shay told Daily Mail Australia,

“We just emailed them really. I don’t think they’re massive on the internet over there so I don’t think they had many opportunities to research… We didn’t think we’d actually be accepted.”

Surprisingly they were accepted, and so in classic Aussie spirit they went all out for the prank, getting custom designed Australian blazers to tour Pyongyang as Australia’s National Golf Team. Genius.

The Aussie lads shot over 120, finishing with a respectable second (Ruig) and third (Shay) last place. But hey, at least they didn’t come last. Even better, and they didn’t out-golf North Korea meaning they don’t have to worry about being held for 15 years hard labour. Most importantly they pulled off one of the best pranks we’ve ever seen. So who are the real winners?

Rumour has it the Brissie boys are now looking forward to competing in the 2017 Somali Open.
